No Kill Conference
A New Day Dawns July 31 - August 1, 2010 in Washington D.C. Last year's groundbreaking No Kill Conference was the sold out, must attend event of the year. We're doing it again! Join the nation's best shelter directors, animal lawyers, and shelter reformers for an inspiring and empowering conference that will help you save lives. We are already at 90% of capacity, barely a month after announcing the conference. If you would like to attend, we urge you to register today - as once we sell out, there are no waiting lists and no exceptions! The No Kill Advocacy Center is teaming up with the Animal Law program at George Washington University Law School, Maddie's Fund and Friends of Animals to bring together the nation's most successful shelter directors and the nation's top animal lawyers. They will help you create a No Kill community and teach you how to use the legal system to save the lives of animals. Learn from animal control/shelter directors who are now saving over 90% of all animals using the building blocks to No Kill success - programs and services that have had results in both urban and rural communities - to increase adoptions, reduce length of stay, increase redemption rates, rehabilitate animals, and much, much more. Learn from animal law experts who have challenged our legal system to help animals: Whether it's drafting model laws, fighting breed specific legislation, eliminating the gas chamber, filing impact legislation, or protecting condemned dogs, learn how to use the legal system to save the lives of animals. Learn from activists fighting entrenched and regressive shelters in their own community as they show you how to launch successful campaigns for reform. There seems to have been some mistake. But it can't possibly have been my fault. The National Animal Rights Spring Gathering is in March.
Friday 12th - Sunday 14th March, 2010. The Sumac Centre, 245 Gladstone Road, Nottingham, NG7 6HX. But better make sure if you are going. Contact nar(at)veggies.org -------------- On 24th April is World Day for Animals in Laboratories. An anti-vivisection rally in Cavendish Square followed by a march through London Town - along Regent Street, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square; then Whitehall, past Downing Street and on to the Houses of Parliament. Anti-vivisection speeches will be made there. Meet at Cavendish Square at 11 am. Nearest Tube station is Oxford Circus. Buses and coaches are being arranged from various places. More details or to reserve a seat: www.wdail.org or e-mail to info(at)wdail.org

There is a simple way you can help Animal Aid the next time you are in a supermarket or other shop that sells meat. They are trying to find out which slaughterhouses supply various shops with meat. Meat that is wrapped or in a container will have a code on it to show which slaughterhouse or 'cutting plant' it came from. It often starts with EC and then a four-digit number. The numbers will be on packed meat but not on any that has been cured, smoked, turned into sausages or ready meals. Write the number down and send it to kate(at)animalaid.co.uk and describe what the number was on (such as a leg of lamb) along with the name of the shop and the town.

Urgent appeal for temporary volunteers at a chicken and turkey santuary in Sussex.
I was sent this: ======== My name’s Drew and I am a volunteer at Hen Heaven, a local chicken & turkey sanctuary in Henfield. I've been given your name as someone who may be able to help, so hope you don't mind the email. Could you please pass this message around animal lovers as we are desperate for volunteers. Linda, who lives at and runs Hen Heaven, needs to have an operation on the 24th June, and we urgently needs some volunteers to help her look after our rescued ex-battery chickens and turkeys as she recovers for a week or two after the operation. Linda will be there and will tell everyone what do do, but she will need help to feed the girls and also to check and treat them for any illnesses. There is no prior experience needed, and she will give full instructions at the time. Even an hour or two will help, just to help feed or check the girls are okay. If anyone is interested, can they please call Linda directly on her mobile – 07754 550193 - and let her know they have seen her appeal for volunteers. Linda will be delighted to get help. She doesn't have voicemail, so please keep trying if she is busy with the girls. She does not have access to a pc and does not have a land line so it’s best to contact her on the mobile. The Hen Heaven e-mail address comes through to me as I look after the e-mails for Linda. More information Hen Heaven is at our website. http://www.henheaven.org Many thanks, Drew ========= The sanctuary does sell eggs to people who visit but no birds are harmed or killed. They live out their lives there.

One of these days I'd like to get over to the UK and see some of these vegan festivals.
We are having the SF Veg Fest in October. I missed last year's. I'll try to get to this one.
