View Full Version : Glasses and Drinking and Waste...

So...a few months ago, I came home to find a broken glass (drinking) on the kitchen floor. My cat, pepper, who usually greets me at the door, was missing. I freaked out and yelled for him and he finally came, but that was terrifying.
Just today, I was doing the dishes and heard a glass crack in the other room. I ran over and found that Pepper had knocked a glass off of the nightstand. It was broken and he was about to put his face into it. I caught him in time and cleaned it up.
My question is, what to do? I buy gallons of spring water (that's all I'll drink, except at restaurants) for home, to pour in glasses, and then, if I'm on the go, I buy the 12 or 16 oz. bottles, but I'd hate to do all bottles. The thing is, how do I prevent the cats from messing with the glasses and hurting themselves? I don't necessarily want plastic cups. Ugh!

What about those polycarbonate glasses? I bought a set at Bed, Bath & Beyond because I didn't want real glass around the kids, least not yet and it doesn't give the water a funky taste and the kitties can't get hurt. Or go the opposite end and get some heavy-duty, metal drinking vessels. Any decent Indian market will have those.

This is not unusual. Some cats really have a fascination for glass. I can't count how many customers of mine have the strangest set-ups for their cats' drinking water, including glasses on nightstands, right by the bathroom sink, or even a number of glasses glued to a tray and set on the floor so the cats can't tip them over and break them.
You'll have to figure out what Pepper's goal is. He may be trying to tell you that he wants to drink from a glass, like you do. You may have to be diligent about making sure you leave no glasses out when you're not home, and try setting a glass out on the floor for him to drink from. The funny thing about cats and drinking glasses is that they can only stick their heads in so far, and then they can't drink any more water, but I know cats who will not drink from any other container.
What's a mystery to me is how they manage to get their people to figure out what they want in the first place! But there are several cats I've cared for who managed to "tell" me that they love a drink from the bathroom faucet, and I have confirmed this afterwards with their people, who neglected to tell me beforehand that their cats like to do this. Cats are amazing!

Mine do like water from the sink and from glasses (cups). I'll have to see what BB&B has! I have a coupon. :)

Won't Pepper drink from a bowl? Enamel or earthenware.

Hehe! Not if he prefers a people glass.
Cats are inscrutable.

they will drink out of the bowls (i have two cats; freesia, as far as i know, hasn't knocked a glass over and broken it - she's more gentle LOL) but both prefer cups/glasses. :)
You could use a mug to drink from.
