Both of my dog's ears are infected. Poor thing, he had been itching and scratching for a while (too long) before his absent minded mommy realized she should take him to the vet. They irrigated/cleaned his ears and gave me medication to take home. I feel so guilty for not taking him earlier, it must have caused so much discomfort.:( Hopefully, he'll feel better soon. I made him a nice homemade dinner tonight, and he's now sound asleep with his head buried in the pillow..:moonjar:
I love this dog to pieces.....

Aww, poor sweetie! I used to go through that with Fod when I first brought him home from the shelter. I will send good thoughts his way, and I hope he's having sweet dreams. :colors:

Thank you, Fauxmage.:) Do you go to a holistic vet?...

I'm so happy I went yesterday. I just can't believe I've been so ignorant about the signs of ear infection - I thought ear scratching and head shaking is what dogs do from time to time. I also thought it might have been a mild allergy, not much to worry about. Whippets can also be very stoic (contrary to what most people believe because of their fragile look) and don't show they're in pain until, in many cases, it has reached an extreme level.:(

He'll be all right now that you're alerted. Good thoughts will be winging their way.

Yes, fortunately the raw food co-op I belong to is also holistically-focussed, and refers holistic vets who don't believe in unnecessary vaccinations, and they also refer trainers who don't require proof of vaccinations before joining class. What animals receive when they are babies is enough, according to responsible vets. Unfortuantely, the law believes otherwise.
I never recognized Fod's ear infection until he shook his ears so much that he got an embolism in one of them. :( Its an easy thing to miss, because their ears are partially covered, and like you said, they are always scratching something. They were recurrent until I switched him from his vegan kibble to a raw diet. It was almost impossible for me to do, but I had to face it that the diet was not suitable for him, even though it had been fine for my two previous dogs.

You know, I have been questioning whatever he might be allergic to his kibble, which actually is an "allergy formula".... but that might not matter much in his case. He's scratches his mouth after eating too and has had itchy ears for so long... I might have to try only home cooking for a while with some multi-vitamin supplement. I'm definietely not confident enough cook entirely vegan for a dog since the protein, vitamin, mineral requirements etc. are different than for humans, so I might try going for a balanced omni diet instead. THANKS again, Fauxmage.:)

I hope he's doing better, Soynut. Is the ear infection the reason why he isn't showing his head in your current avatar? ;)
I know what you mean about feeling bad for missing signs. We put Feline through that once because right when the kids were born, she stopped eating but we were so busy with having newborn twins and doing everything ourselves, that Mr. TVT couldn't get her to the vet for a few weeks. She had an infection and needed antibiotics. I still feel bad, 3 years later.

Is the ear infection the reason why he isn't showing his head in your current avatar? ;) :D No, no, he would kill me if he knew I'm showing his rear end on the internet.:p
