Rome Show Features Ancient Perfumes

ROME - It's a rare chance to smell the scent of ancient history - typically a mix of natural spices and olive oil - thanks to an exhibit in Rome featuring fragrances from the world's oldest known perfume factory.
On display are four perfumes recreated by a team of archaeologists from 14 original fragrances dating from 4,000 years ago. Digging at the Pyrgos-Mavroraki site in Cyprus, they turned up a complex believed to have been used as a perfume lab.
The archaeologists used fragrances extracted from traces left in containers at the site to recreate ancient aromas with the same techniques used in the past, said Maria Rosaria Belgiorno, the leading archaeologist who discovered the factory in 2003.
"Today, we are used to chemical and alcoholic scents, but these are fresher ones, smelling of herbs and spices, like almond, coriander, myrtle, conifer resin, bergamot - and not flowers," said Belgiorno, who is also the curator of the exhibit at Rome's Capitoline Museums.
The perfumes were made through the lengthy steeping of the spices in water and oil and other ancient techniques, she told The Associated Press.
The perfumes - named for the Greek goddesses Hera, Athena, Aphrodite and Artemis - are displayed behind glass, with a lid that visitors can lift up to smell the fragrances. Alongside are 60 items, including amphorae, jugs, grinders and distilling equipment, discovered at the site some 60 miles southwest of Nicosia.
While perfumes and ointments have been found in tombs in Egypt and Mesopotamia, Belgiorno said this was a rare case where an entire factory dedicated to making perfume was found.
The 42,300-square-foot lab, believed to have been destroyed in an earthquake in antiquity, is exceptionally well-preserved, Belgiorno said, and shows that making perfume was a serious business. The 2000 B.C. complex included an olive press room, areas dedicated to the working and refining of copper, and five 106- to 132-gallon oil-storage containers. It employed dozens of people, show organizers said.
Throughout the Bronze Age and into the 1st millennium B.C., Cyprus played a key role in copper and olive oil production and trade. Olive oil was used as a base for medicine, cosmetics and perfume, some of which were exported, mainly to Greece.
"The Perfumes of Aphrodite and the Secret of Oil" exhibit, which opened March 14, runs through Sept. 2.

I wish someone around here would put on a similar show. Or start marketing something like this. Its all vegan, no animal testing necessary since its stood the test of being used by the ancient Roman people.

I'd like to be able to smell them to see how they differ from some of the crap they sell now. They've got to smell much better - being natural.

I've never been able to tolerate most synthetic perfumes, but I have some made by Kuumba Made (http://209.200.67.135/ZenCart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=20&show_main=1) that are all natural plant essences. They smell really good, they last a long time, and they don't make me sick. :smallheart:

Really Paul - some give me a headache - some make me actually nauseous. That looks like a good site Fauxmage - they will even sell you a sample bottle - good to try to see if you actually want to invest more in something you haven't tried before.

I really like "Zen Rain" and "White Ginger", as they are both light and kind of spicy, rather than being overly sweet and heavy. My local Whole Foods Markets sells quite a few, though, so I was lucky to get a free sniff before purchasing. "Black Coconut" is good too. It makes me think of coconut oil sun lotion, which is a nice, summery tropical smell. Not good for folks who don't like coconut, though.

I have been meaning to make my own scent for years. I have bought a bottle of ylang ylang essential oil and some cedar oil. I intend to mix some other oils to get a blend I like. I could mix them in vodka but would prefer to mix them in water. I might do it one day.

I got a vial of the Kuumba Made "Oriental Musk". It is really nice. There were about 15 to choose from but I liked this one the best...or maybe it just suited my mood today.
There was a Sandalwood fragrance that I liked as well. Maybe I'll get that one next.

I was looking through my How it all Vegan (http://www.shop.com/op/aprod-p28890442-k24-g1-~%22how+it+all+vegan%22-nover) book today and found 2 recipes for homemade scent. I like this book because it contains easy vegan recipes plus recipes for homemade cleansers, children's crafts and health and beauty products.

Perfume

1 tsp. essential oil (your choice)
1 tbsp. almond oil

In a clean, dry bottle, pour ingredients and shake well before using. Good for 1 year.

Solid Perfume

1/4 cup almond oil
3-4 tbsp. cocoa butter (solid), grated
1-2 Vitamin E capsules, pierced and drained
7-15 drops of essential oil (your choice)

In a small saucepan on medium-low heat, melt the oil, cocoa butter, Vitamin E oil and fragrance together until well-mixed. Pour into a small, clean, dry bottle and let cool. Once cool and set, cap tightly and use as needed. To make the perfume softer, add a bit more oil; to make it harder, add more cocoa butter.

Some essential oil scent combinations:
jasmine/patchouli :bloom:
lavender/spearmint
sandalwood, musk, frankincense
sandalwood, musk, patchouli :meditate:
lemon, spearmint, grapefruit :excited:
vanilla/musk
ginger, cinammon, clove (to smell like Christmas baking :santa:)
stawberry/vanilla (to smell like a bakery :yum:)

Thank you, Vegantwins. I don't like to use regular perfumes anymore, they're usually too strong and, of course, often animal tested. I've been using a perfume oil from Whole Foods which I love. I assume it's probably made similarly to those in your post.:)
