There's a raccoon that visits me every night at my evening job. The poor animal has an injured hind leg and hops around on three legs. Seems to do fine but does anyone suggest trying to capture him/her and bring her/him into a vet? I feed it muffins, and he/she never hisses at me and isn't afraid of me. Not sure if it is rabid or not. I'm going to try and snap a pic.

I've been considering getting a baby raccoon and raising it as a companion. I've read that they make lovely house mates and get along very well with cats and dogs.

I think I would probably try to capture the beastie so a vet could have look. If you do, make sure you wear thick gloves.

I've found out most vets won't bother with them.

I've also looked into the pet thing further and I'm not prepared to lock all of my cupboards up. I think I will be content with feeding them in the wild when I run across them even if I never got to pet them that way. What's cool about them is, like dogs, they will eat what you eat. They can be raised vegan and use a litter box.

There are usually a few vets out there who will handle wildlife. You could try calling your local ASPCA and ask if they know of one. Don't tell them why you are calling though because they will probably try to capture the raccoon and kill him/her to test for rabies.

What about contacting a wildlife shelter or sanctuary?

But where are the baby raccoons that become companions sourced from?

I guess there are people who snatch them up after they are weaned from their yards. Not really sure. They are a lot of work to keep indoors. They're just so darn cute and adventurous. I didn't see my pal last night.
