Sound like a no brainer?... I thought so until I was reading an Ikea catalogue and noticed that they were proudly talking about the natural fibres in their mattresses - horse hair - camel etc. :O
I have been without a mattress for months for the simple fact that finding one that I like that is vegan isn't that easy - but I need to get one today.
I have been told to get latex. Even then the cloth / poly washeable cover has sheep hair in it!!! The guy sounded proud of the fact and was taken aback when I objected.
Another salesperson did the same thing when told no animal fibres. ''Oh no, certainly not, they are all made hypoallergenic here, foam, cotton, springs, wool...'' ....since when isn't wool from a sheep?
Anyhow - it's proving to be tough, but considering that I am technically spending 1/3 of my day on the bed (I wish) I had better make it a good investment.
What is everyone else using? (Oh - and I hate cotton futons). :)

I guess :updn: down under is different because here, wool is considered a premium addition to a mattress :blecch: so it's easy to find one without as long as you don't look at the fancy-shmancy mattresses. Ours is just cotton, polyester and foam. The kids' matresses are covered in latex as well.

I was going to suggest a futon. The best mattress I've ever had was just a sheet of four inch foam. I went to a place that cut it as you waited. It gave great support. I put a sheet of half-inch ply on top of the bed as a base for it. Best to have holes drilled in the plywood to let air through each time you move. Not very environmentally friendly but other mattresses probably aren't, either.

I am ashamed to say that I never even thought about what my mattress was made of as I have had the same one for years. :( It is getting a bit lumpy and due for replacement before long - I guess I'll be reading labels and inquiring as to ingredients soon myself.

I can't sleep on a futon. They kill my back. I got a mattress from Ikea, made from 100% cotton. It was their most expensive option, naturally. I'm surprised you can't get a 100% cotton mattress from Ikea where you are, Alistair. I think latex is a good alternative, though. Or, try an air mattress. They are pretty comfortable, and they are priced competetively with regular mattresses. At least, around here they are. I've got one I use for camping, that inflates with a battery-powered motor.

I've just ordered a couple of hours ago a new divan bed with a foam mattress (which is supposed to be memory foam which is good for your back as it remembers your posture.)
The bunny chewed through half the wood while under the bed at home and the other day my pine bed collapsed on me thanks to him!

Ow! I hope it didn't hurt too much, Tigger. That bunny is lucky the bed didn't collapse on him!

Oh dear! Are you both alright? :comfort:

Our mattress was bought quite a long time ago but I remember that finding a vegan one meant going for a cheaper rather than a more expensive option. Ours has coiled springs, polyester foam stuff and a cotton cover. The bed base is wooden slats on a frame. The expensive mattresses 'boasted' wool overlays and other such rubbish.
