Am I the first person here to have tried Peanut Milk? I just saw some in my local Mollie Stone's market. They had plain, and chocolate flavored. Its pretty good! I am taking a swig right now, and its fresh, and kind of "planty", with a very slight hint of peanut flavor, but not the sort of flavor that comes from roasted peanuts, or even peanut butter. I find it much more appealing, on the first try, than I found my first try of soymilk.
They have a website here (http://peanutmilk.net/en/index.php), and apparently, the drink originated right in San Francisco. There are some interesting articles on some of the health claims being made. I'm not sure about the health claims, since I don't know much about the special qualities of peanuts, but its a tasty alternative to cow milk. There is also a good explanation of where aflatoxin comes from, and an assurance that the company does its best to make sure that their peanuts are not stored in conditions that encourage the growth of this toxic fungus.

Sounds intriguing! :agree: I have never heard of it. I shall have to keep an eye out for its appearance here. :yum:

I wonder what they'll make milk out of next? Brazils? Cabbage?

I've never heard of it or seen it around here, leave it to those wild :acidnana: San Franciscans to invent it. :D

Its too bad it has to be kept in the refrigerated section. If it came in shelf-stable packaging I'd send you all a sample.

Thanks but we don't need anything else tasty but unattainable. 1Vegan sent me a parcel with some chocolate spread that Mr. TVT has gone crazy over. :choc:

I have made milk from brazil nuts and pecans before with good results.
Maybe I'll make my own peanut milk!
This sounds good!! :D

mmmm. Sounds yummy and intreging. I have not seen any here. The most exiotic milk here is rice and almond. That's not exotic. Silk makes an almond milk that is *heavenly*. It does not have as much protien as soy milk according to the labels. But then I don't have to get my protein all in one pkg.
I have been wanting to play with making my own. I wanna try brazil nuts and walnuts. Seperatly, that is. Doesn't macadameia nut milk sound good??
All you need is a blender or food processor, right? Do any of you guys have a nut milk maker? All I really need is a cloth strainer, right?

I wouldn't mind trying it but I doubt it's in the UK.

I imagine it could be made in the same way as almond milk. Soak overnight, skim the skins off, put in a blender with water and blend. I might try it if I find my blender thing. Peanuts are a lot cheaper than almonds.

I think you would need to use boiled peanuts rather than roasted ones. The product is made from "fresh" peanuts, but they must be boiled, as raw peanuts are toxic, or so I have read. I'm not sure boiled peanuts are available much of anywhere except the Southern US, where they are a popular treat. I certainly have never seen boiled peanuts available for sale anywhere.
Maybe the unsalted in shell peanuts might work well. They never seem as strong in flavor as shelled peanuts roasted for snacking. My Dad gets those to feed "his" squirrels with, and they aren't as "peanutty". I should experiment!

But surely, the unsalted peanuts that we eat will be all right for making milk?
Just looked it up. The boiled peanuts are green 'unripe' ones. Ripe ones don't boil well. Wikiwotsit says this about the milk:
Peanut milk is similar to almond milk, soy milk and rice milk in its production: the substance is ground, soaked, sometimes heated, and then filtered through a fine filter – the resulting liquid is considered the "milk".
It has some interesting things to say about the uses of peanuts including that, ounce for ounce, they have more resveratrol than grapes.

Oh I'm sure whatever peanuts are available would make milk, I am just not sure it would taste just like this product, which isn't really at all peanutty in the way that peanut butter is.
I never knew that about peanuts and resveratrol. That must be what the peanut milk site raves about. It's getting lots of attention as an anti-aging and healing compound.

James Duke, in Green Pharmacy, says that the skins of red skinned peanuts are high in oligomeric procyanidins which help to protect the heart.

When I was little I loved Spanish peanuts the best. They had pretty thick skins. We used to go shopping at Sears Roebuck, and I would get a small bag of them from the snack bar to keep me quiet while my parents shopped.

I don't like peanuts very much. I prefer salted but don't eat them because they are salty.

Oh I love them. Always have. It was a really big deal when I was a kid when my Mom came home from the store with a big bag of unshelled peanuts. My Dad would pour them into a big salad bowl and we would stand there shelling them and munching on them.

About the only time we had nuts was at Christmas. Brazils, almonds and hazelnuts still in their shells.

I made a chocolate milkshake last night, and I blended in some crunchy peanut butter. It was nutty mmmmmmmmm.

Try some tahini next time. Then it will be a chocohini milkshake.

I blend walnuts with raisins, and strain the mixture for a great tasting milk. You can also throw in a pinch of salt.
