My dog helped himself to some of my coconut tofu and cauliflower dinner today. (He'll sometimes steal food off my plate when I'm in the bathroom even though he knows it's NOT OK with mommy). If it's something really harmful (like chocolate!) I always put it away before I leave the room. Anyway, he loved the curry... but spicy food is bad for dogs, I've heard, so I didn't want him to eat it straight like that. I put some curried tofu pieces, mixed with some brown rice and olive oil to take out some of the spice.

What do you think? Is it OK to give dogs a milder verison of you own spicy food? What about tofu in general, is that all right?

My whippet is a vegan and eat mostly kibble (which he loves, thanks god), but I like to mix it up for him little and give him variation. The problem is that he's a picky eater. Any suggestions on vegan yummy dinner food for dogs?

Suggestions? Hum.....I'm not sure but I saved this a while back if you
want to take a look......there were some things there I sure didn't know about. Toxic Foods and Plants for Dogs (http://www.entirelypets.com/toxicfoods.html)

I don't know about spicy food.

On a site called cooldogtoys (meat-eater based) they give advice on feeding dogs. I don't know how reliable it is. At least number 49 is sound advice.

ADVICE 45
Boiled rice will also be part of the puppy's diet.

ADVICE 47
Products such as beans, peas, potatoes, etc. are harmful for your dog.

ADVICE 49
Even when it may sound funny, milk is not very recommendable for puppies because they don't digest it well and it can cause them gastric problems.

This has some info but, again, I'm not sure how accurate. Further down is a long list of things that shouldn't be fed to dogs, including raisins and macadamia nuts.

Thank you guys.: He has always rejected or spitted out what's harmful for him (grapes, onion etc.), so I just assumed this curry might be OK for him. Anyone here with a vegan dog BTW? My doggy is really healthy - he's has a good weight and is a very happy go lucky guy with lots of energy! He has been vegan for about 2 years now.

He has been vegan for about 2 years now, and it's working great.
That's really good to hear, Soynut! :agree:

:catn:

This thread is now being hijacked by Felíne. She wants to know if it's okay if she has a teeny bit of cashew butter. I just discovered that she likes it but don't know if nuts are okay for a cat.

Anyone know?

Sorry, no idea, but I thought I'd reply in order to bump this up to the top of the New Posts list again in case someone else knows! ;)

I've never heard of cashews being bad for cats. Mine get coconut milk. Coconuts and cashews are not related, but the coconut doesn't hurt the cats, so as long as you don't notice any bad effects, it should be ok.

I don't know how trustworthy this advice is but they recommend nuts in one of their recipes:

http://cats.about.com/cs/catfood/a/bybrawdiets.htm?terms=diet+supplements+revealed

This one, too: http://www.crvetcenter.com/foodallergy.htm

This says that macadamia nuts are harmful to cats:

http://www.crvetcenter.com/foodallergy.htm

Macadamia nuts Contain an unknown toxin, which can affect the digestive and nervous systems and muscle.

This one says that macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs:

http://www.petplace.com/cats/dangerous-foods-are-they-harmful-to-your-cat/page1.aspx

Macadamia Nuts. Macadamia nuts, also called the Queensland nut or Australia nut, can be toxic. The mechanism behind why these nuts are toxic is a mystery. However, it has been noted that as few as six to forty nuts in dogs have caused severe toxic signs. Dogs develop weakness, depression, vomiting, difficulty walking, tremors, abdominal pain, lameness, stiffness and/or pale gums. The signs usually dissipate in 12 to 24 hrs.

I think that's the scariest aspect of feeding cats and dogs 'human' food, that some things might be okay like cashew or almond while another similar item like a macadamia nut can be lethal. Plus, there is so much conflicting advice out there.

Agree. I want to make my dog more fresh homemade food, but there are so many restrictions that it's hard to think of anything flavorful to make. Soy, wheat and corn is not good either, so what does it leave me with other than kibble and some fresh carrots?....

It says 6 to 40 macadamia nuts. Who would give a dog 40 of them? I wouldn't eat 40. In fact, humans shouldn't eat too many Brazil nuts or you could get selenium poisoning. About 6 shelled ones a day is probably the maximum. But it depends on the amount of selenium in the soil they grow in. I must admit, though, that I quite often have more than that in a day.

And it says about macadamia nuts that they are also called the Queensland nut. Those Queenslanders are often the cause of trouble.

Is he coming back? It's not the same without him. There's no other nincompoop here.

Its not looking very likely, I'm afraid. I shall explain presently, but in another thread.
