One my my dogs has a UTI. I noticed blood in her urine yesterday and took her to our new vet. They confirmed a UTI and we are all hoping that's all it is. He said that it could be caused by stones and/or a kidney problem. We're going to treat the UTI with antibiotics (not my favorite idea but she's pretty sick) and then see if it comes back.
We knew she was suffering from incontinence and the vet said that it could be caused by the infection, so we're also hoping that the incontinence will stop.
We just started with this new vet and I am thrilled with him. He came in, shook my hand, and immediately got down on the floor with Lacey (our dog). He did the entire exam sitting on the floor with her, letting her lick him on the face the whole time.
I was there for over an hour and we talked a lot about homeopathic type treatments vs drugs, etc. He mentioned that they want to have at least one doctor in the office that is trained in acupuncture, natural treatments, etc. I'm in love with these people!!!!! :nanakiss:
So...any good thoughts for Lacey would be much appreciated. :agree:

Wow, it sounds like you found a great vet! UTIs are usually easy to wipe out with antibiotics, and hopefully there is nothing else wrong. I'm sending good thoughts Lacey's way right now.

I hope that Lacey is soon on the mend. If you are interested in herbal/homeopathic remedies for after she has had her antibiotics the following website might interest you.

Their UTI-Free seems to be good. It's herbal and homeopathic. I don't know anything about it except what they say on the website. It contains lactose.
I'll be sending Lacey good thoughts before I go to sleep.

Thanks everyone. Martin, I'll be checking out that website as soon as I'm done posting this.
Her urine looks much better today. No sign of blood.
Have any of you heard of a new flea product called "Sentinel"? I haven't given my dogs any kind of over the counter or prescription flea medicine for almost two years. I hate the idea of putting a topical poison on thier skin. This new product is an oral medication and according to the vet it doesn't actually kill the fleas...it alters their breeding capability so that they can not produce viable eggs. Apparently it is regulated by the FDA, which means that it was probably tested on some poor beagles.
On another site, Fauxmage recommended swimming in salt water, and I've also heard that nutritional yeast is good. We just switched their food to a very high quality very expensive (unfortunately, non vegan) kibble and I'm adding raw fruits and veggies. I'm hoping that if I can boost their immune system via nutrition, we can decrease the flea problem.

The Radio Vet on the weekend was singing the praises of ''Frontline'' as a once a month flea treatment. She said that it is not toxic to the dog or people, only the fleas and is much less toxic than the collars - and more effective.
She was reluctant to give a brand name on air but really endorsed this one for the protection of the animals. She was scathing about some of the others found in the supermarket and said they can be very nasty for all concerned.
Here's some info - Burke's Backyard. (http://www.burkesbackyard.com.au/2004/archives/2004/pets,_pet_care,_backyard_and_native_animals/flea_control)
