Hi everyone!
Should we have a chat thread here at The Naked Vegan? I have been thinking of adding a chat room, when we get more active members, but they don't seem as popular as chat threads. I am pretty sure I can set it up so that the posts don't show up in the "New Posts" page, which can be disturbing to some, either by making the thread password protected or creating a joinable user group. There may be other options too.
The poll is multiple choice. Some things to know about chat rooms are that people can enter chat rooms without being members of our site, and they can choose any name they please with which to do this, which could cause trouble. Banned members can also join chat rooms.
Let me know what you think!

I've never used nor been in a chat room, so I can't comment on them. But the chat thread is a good idea.
For all you people who need to engage in empty-headed babble, that is. I will only pop in to raise the tone and direct the conversation to more erudite and learned topics. :book:

So far, 100% of respondents want a chat thread but 0% of respondents want a chat room.

Its a multiple choice poll, so if you agree with the statement, vote; if you disagree, don't vote, and vote for as many as you agree with. I think. ;) :bhead:
me is thick whats the diffrence to a chat room and a chat thread:dunce: :o

Hi paul,
A chat room is a separate bit of software that people can use to chat to each other. Chats are not usually stored in them for very long, and they have no impact on forum activity. You have to log in separately, but you do not need membership to do so, even if you must be a member of the forum the chat room is linked to. You can also make up any username you want, which means that someone who didn't like you, for instance, could use your name in the chat room, insult a bunch of people, and then they would all think it was you and be mad at you. This wouldn't happen in a chat thread, since only you can log in with your username, and no one else can choose your username when they join the forum. I think Tigger's place has a chat room, or at least it used to, but I don't know if anyone uses it. The Vegan Forum has one too, and I have seen banned members using it after they got banned, which may or may not be a good thing. :)
thanks for that fauxmage. it maks perfict sense now.
i think tiggs has a room and thread but no one uses the room.
me thinks erm ahhr a errrm a thread would be better.

Yes, I've found chat rooms get frighteningly hectic when there's more than about 3 people in it. Chat threads are better.
A couple of other points from my observations. It will probably increase the general traffic on the site which will probably be a good thing. The flip side is that chat style threads do take a bit more modding :D
Passworded or members only chat is a good idea. As people chat away I think they tend to forget themselves a bit occasioanlly so its prob better if that happens in a more protected environment.
But yeah go for it, I reckon its worthwhile.

OK, we have a private subforum for chatting threads now, that will not be accessible by search engines, guests, or even registered members. In order to keep potentially large numbers of chat posts from overwhelming the "New Posts" list for peoople not interested in chatting, I have created a Usergroup for people who want to chat. Its called "Chin Waggers". To join, and start chatting, Click on "User CP" in the upper left corner of the forum menu bar. At the lower left corner you will find the "Group Memberships" link. Click on this, and the Chin Waggers usergroup will appear in the window. Click on the "Join" button, and you should be able to see "Fabulous Confabulations", which is our new, private chatting subforum.
Chat posts will still be visible to members of the Chin Waggers in the "New Posts" list, but to search the list you can always leave the Chin Waggers, read the list, and then rejoin when you want to chat.

Just as a reminder to our members, and to let the new members know also, we have a private chat thread here, rather than a chat room, and the instructions for joining the usergroup so you can participate are in the post above. ^ :) :updn:
Once you join the "Chin Waggers" usergroup (Thank you Gliondrach  ) the "Fabulous Confabulations" (Thank you dreamer  ) subforum will appear like magic!

Good night and sweet dreams.

That's odd. Here (http://www.thenakedvegan.net/showthread.php?t=520) is the thread, though I expect that anyone who is not a member of the user group will get a "no permission" message if they click on the link.
Let me know if there is anyone else who is having trouble folks. You are all welcome to join and chat!

Also, feel free to start your own chat thread. There's plenty of room, so we can have more than one, in case someone wants to chat about a particular subject, or the threads get too long.
MMmm should i start a thread. no there are so many here that are so good, and i cant think of anything to say.

Here's is the tricky side of us being so global, currently I'm all by myself - so chatting, in I'd have thought a chat room for refreshing change, may get a little lonesome! :sigh:

I'm used to being by myself. You get used to it. Try not to talk to yourself too much or the neighbours will shun you. I speak from personal experience.
