View Full Version : Do we need them?

This is the place to question the things that we might not need. Or we might need. You can be serious or not so serious.

In the UK we've been without a government for more than a week. But the country is going along quite well without one. The lights come on, there's water in the taps, food in the shops, the trains run - more or less - and there are things on the telly.

Do we really need the government? What if they go on negotiating and trying to make deals for another year? Will the country grind to a halt? Or will the economic mess they helped to cause sort itself out without them?

When I was a cake decorator, we went on for months without a bakery department manager. No one wanted the job! Of course I was the scapegoat whenever something went wrong. Someone had to be I guess. :disbelief:  That's why when someone from produce asked me if I was getting the job I uncharacteristically shouted "Hell NO!" :D

Did it run well without a manager?

Yes it ran fine. However, there was no one to blame when the store managers felt things weren't going the way they wanted. I ended up getting lots of undeserved blame, since people had an idea of my intelligence and expected more from me than others. I remember a few afternoons when I was decorating cakes like mad, and they were literally being purchased within five minutes of my putting them on the shelf. I couldn't understand it; why there were so many cake customers! I did make great cakes though, and they really appealed to people. They were custom works of edible art, if I do say so myself, but I was getting in trouble for the empty shelves. It wasn't my fault! I don't know why they didn't check the cashiers for cake sale records. People really were buying them as fast as I could decorate them.

It was my dissatisfaction with how I was treated there that made me leave, and set me back on the path to going back to school to finish my degree, and starting my dog walking business.

Typical management - they want to have their cake and eat it.

Ties. We don't need them. A lot of politicians don't wear them when they are being interviewed on TV.

Plastic carrier bags. We don't need them. Reusable bags are cheaper in the longrun and more roomy.

I sure don't think we need ties.

I've started taking a backpack with me when I go shopping. Things feel so much lighter when carried on the back.

But what would we spill our soup on if we didn't wear ties?

Bib? Or perhaps you could be in a giant bubble, with only the mouth accessible to the outside world. It'd be easier cleanup at least...

I'll have to look for a bib, then.
