I've discovered that we don't have a thread for this, and since I am eating some of the most delicious, cool, and refreshing hibiscus sorbet RIGHT NOW, I thought I'd better make a thread about it.

I've never had hibiscus sorbet before, and it is a very warm, sunny day, so this treat is really hitting the spot. Yum! :eat: :yum:

Its light and tangy, and has a pretty pink color. Have you ever had hibiscus tea, or any Jamaican drinks with hibiscus in them?

Here's a picture of one:

I knew that some food comes from one type of hibiscus - okra - but I didn't know other types were edible. You lives and learns.

That flower looks like the plant I used to have but mine had red flowers.

Gliondrach

Eh? Do you mean you don't know that 4oz is a quarter of a pound or that it is a quarter of 454 grams? You don't use Napoleonic measures, surely? Four ounces is also 64 drams. You must get into the spirit of the thing and use proper weights.

1vegan
06-29-2007, 07:41 AM
In the U.S, an oz can also point to a volume, I think they call it fluid oz, and it's not always clear if they mean the weight or the liquid oz :)

(at least it's not always clear to me :o )

We don't use proper weights in the US, 4oz in the US would equal fluid ounces. I'm not sure what that would equal in solid weight. I'm guessing 1/4 cup but not sure.

Gliondrach

Over here, there are 20 fluid ounces or four gills to the pint. A cup of lead will be heavier than a cup of water. You need to buy some scales. Well, the average apple weighs about 4-6 ounces - compare the flour, or whatever it is, to that.

This isn't what we're eating now but will be eating on July 4th as a special treat. This chef used to work at a vegan restaurant not far from us. The restaurant closed last spring but he does a vegan pick-up food service which I've never tried but will do so this week. The food sounds fantastic as does the cause:

This week (aside from just being a gorgeous seven days of summer time) will be the week of July Fourth. A holiday I personally celebrate (contrary to the conventional focus of the holiday) in respect to the indigenous peoples of this land we now inhabit. The original, forgotten inhabitants of this continent will be very much in my thoughts. So, I am offering a special menu for July 4th. It will include cooked and raw options so everyone is happy!

15% of the money taken in on that day will be donated to The National Society for American Indian Elderly. This will help fund resources and care to low or no-income native elders. Here is what the NSAIE says about their service:

“ American Indian seniors have the highest rates of poverty and some of the lowest rates for service intervention. The NSAIE reaches approximately 20,000 American Indian seniors which live in areas with extremely high rates of poverty. In fact, poverty rates for American Indian seniors over the age of 60 years exceed 70% in these tribal areas.”

Please have your orders placed by Sunday. Pick up is in Red Bank NJ between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.

Have a beautifull and blissful weekend!

But raw beets can have very different tastes to them, the ones that are harvested in summer have a light taste to them, while if they are older can have a earth like taste to them.

I recall that, in junior school, attended between the ages of 8 and 11, we had a church service once a week. Those of us who were going to Communion had our breakfast at school. You're not supposed to eat anything before Communion so we couldn't have breakfast at home. We had the service first thing and it ended just before morning playtime. Then we went back to the classroom and had our breakfast and the free bottle of milk that all school children had then. We only had sandwiches but they seemed to taste better at school. A delish, delcish, delcio, very tasty discovery apple. My favourite type of apple. They have been in the shops for about two weeks. They will disappear from the shops within a few days. They only have a short season and probably can't be stored. They have a very sharp, almost acidy, taste with an underlying sweetness. Early in the season - last week - the seeds are white. Now they are mostly brown as the season is coming to an end. And that will be it for another year.

I bought some flowery orange pekoe and some lapsang souchong tea today. I don't think I've had the pekoe before. My mother used to sing the praises of broken orange pekoe. This flowery one is really quite nice - I had a cuppa a few minutes ago and will soon have another. When I asked for the lapsang, the assistant asked me if I wanted China or Formosa. When I used to buy it, from that same shop, there was only one kind. She said that the Formosa is the smokier of the two. So I bought that. I hope I've made the right choice. But, in life, I usually make the right choices. It must have something to do with being born with a caul. We tend to be very lucky types.

thevegantwins
08-27-2007, 11:44 AM
Smokier teas are always nicer. :teapot:

I had my first apple of the season this morning. I usually don't buy them over the summer because they are so tasteless but I saw an organic apple at the health food store yesterday. The sign above it said Red Delicious but it did not look anything like one nor did it taste like one. It was delicious though. :apple:

I had 3/4 cup of flax raisin bran for breakie w/ soymilk and a coffee. Lunch was a slow cooker concoction of white beans, wheatberries, edamame, asparagus, broccoli, spinach w/ miso, soy sauce, coriander, tumeric, thyme and pepper plus a little leftover salad from yesterday. Dinner will probably be a veggie burger on toasted ezekiel bread and sauteed kale. Snacks were: 2 apples, 1 kiwi, 1 pear, 2 cups tea w/ soymilk, handful of peanuts and 1 sprouted seed cracker. Lots of water as well. I might have some warm hazelnut milk after dinner. Or Holly Nog. :yum:

Today I haven't been very good:o I got up this morning and made a cinnamon-pecan pastry (it's supposed to be cinnamon rolls, but I end up just folding it on top of itself like an envelope because it's not "tough" enough to roll) that I ate with tea flavored with sugar and silk. For lunch I made a goulash from La Dolce Vegan (though I simplified it and added quinoa) and then had a walnut maple cookie from Vegan with a Vengeance. I've already eaten my dinner, which was a PB&J sandwich and potato chips. In an hour or two, I'll have my smoothie (peaches and vanilla chai smoothie). Then when I go home I'll have a big salad with cucumbers.

I had my usual stew: one onion, one potato, four extremely large Brussels' sprouts (more like mini-cabbages), one carrot and one tomato. With olive oil added after it was cooked and drained. I just ate it straight out of the saucepan. I usually dollop it onto two slices of bread but I just ate the bread. I also had a spoonful of tahini but didn't put it on the bread. Then three Brazil nuts, five almonds, and raisins - about forty-seven of them. And two cups of tea with soya milk. I drank the water that came from the saucepan.

Yeah, I know "pot liquor" is what it's called with water from greens or beans...I haven't really heard it for anything else, though I did find this definition: A rich broth resulting from the prolonged cooking of meat or vegetables, especially greens. Also called pot liquor .

Yesterday I think I had my best day ever when it comes to what I ate:

Breakfast= blueberry pancakes (from Vegan with a Vengeance) with Earth Balance & maple syrup; tea with sugar and Silk
Lunch= braised brussels and seitan (recipe from Veganomicon) with udon noodles, water; (about an hour later--)2 velveteen cupcakes with pecan "cream cheese" frosting (from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, with a couple changes I've made to the frosting)
Snack= huge baby romaine salad with mung bean sprouts and baby corn, miso dressing
Dinner= my mom's veggie soup (she left some for me), water
Later snack= huge sweet potato with Earth Balance; then vanilla soy yogurt

I've bought a tin of potato and leek soup from the Co-op. The ingredienst are:

Water, Leek (20%), Potato (20%), Onion, Dried Red Lentils, Sunflower Oil, Sea Salt, Parsley, White Pepper.

This is just the weather for a hot bowl of soup, with bread to dip in it.

They also had Tomato and Basil, but it has sugar in it. I prefer soup to be unsweet.

Yes, the tomato soup is called cream of tomato soup. I didn't know cream came from tomatoes. These two soups are not the Co-op's own brand. But they have a sign on to say that they are suitable for vegans. That's what the Co-op does with their things that are suitable for us.

Bombay mix is the name used in the UK for a traditional Indian snack known as chiwda or chevda (चिवडा) in India, or chanachur in Bengal. The English name is from the city of Bombay, now called Mumbai. It consists of a variable mixture of spicy dried ingredients, which may include fried lentils, peanuts, gram flour noodles, corn, vegetable oil, chickpeas, flaked rice, and fried onion. This is all flavoured with salt and a blend of spices that may include coriander and mustard seed. It is usually either consumed with the hands, or by spoon or fork.

thevegantwins

Yes. It was hard to find one that did not contain 'natural' flavors which could be anything, even animal-derived. We finally found a brand that contains elderberry, coconut glycerin and water.

Sarah & Ben are eating slices of multigrain bread with pesto. We have so much pesto, they will be eating it on lots of things.

I think I'm having one of my best eating days ever today :D

This morning I had 5 homemade drop biscuits with blackberry all fruit, hot black tea with sugar & Silk
For lunch I had water to drink and to eat better than boullion chicken flavored broth (vegan) which I cooked rice, kale, tofu (cut into cubes), and bean sprouts (put in at the end of cooking) in; then I had a velveteen cupcake with cream cheeze frosting
For dinner I'm going to have notuna salad (from the Nutritional Yeast cookbook) on whole wheat bread, a big salad, and water
Then b4 I go home I'll drink my smoothie made of a fresh SC peach, Silk, and vanilla Whole Soy & Co. yogurt
I may even have some popcorn when I get home if I'm still hungry after all that;)

I also had margarine and tahini on the toast. And two cups of tea. The cups of tea weren't on the toast.

Well, small farmers tend to be more conservative with their use of poison since they have to pay for it themselves plus they are well aware that while the poison kills insects that damage the crops, it also kills insects which are beneficial and depletes the soil. So you can assume that your peach shed farmer grows healthier peaches than available in the supermarket. :agree:

Romaine, spinach, and mixed baby leaf salad with my nutritional yeast dressing (I'm glad my bf likes it, as VT doesn't, and I was worried I was unique to liking it, so at least some people do and he will eat salad with me).

Speaking of peaches, I went to a local farmer's market and saw a peach guy there and asked if he used any poisons. He asked what I meant by "poisons." I said insecticides/pesticides. He explained to me that he does spray but that the amount is so minute that it doesn't matter. I said, well, would you eat directly the stuff you're spraying on the peaches, and he said emphatically "no" of course. I enjoyed talking with him and I"m sure he uses less than others, so I bought a few peaches and ate a couple (yum) but then the rest went bad fast, like 1-2 days. As a raw foodie, I always think fruit will be gone in a day. Not sure why those peaches weren't in my tummy before they got moldy. :p

I think I'd like your dressing if I changed the oil to extra-virgin olive oil. I truly dislike coconut oil and flax oil and can mildly tolerate hemp seed oil

Still think you should open a raw vegan restaurant somewhere in NJ. :D

I do think it'd be nice to have a raw place with lower-fat and more freshly-made items. I have no business experience. And, for example, instead of raw agave, use fruit or something or at least don't use maple syrup or crystals, like Pure does, because those aren't considered raw (and I'm not a purist, but every time I see maple syrup in a raw book, I cringe).

thevegantwins

It would be really nice to see a raw restaurant that had things like a fresh fruit platter, maybe with a dipping sauce (pureed strawberries etc.) and outstanding organic veggies. Maybe you could start with a part-time stand somewhere?
