When I was little, my dad developed a darkroom technique which won him some local acclaim. He took black and white photos, and subjected them to a process which removed all the gray tones and left a high-contrast image in black and white only. Then, depending on the subject, he would airbrush some element in a single bright color. It was a painstaking process!

I have done something similar with some of the pictures I have recently taken. Its funny how easy it is to do now, with a computer, that was so difficult then.

lovely, and vegan:)

i sold all of my darkroom stuff on ebay... it kinda made me sad.

Bowwowmeow

Thanks moie!
It is sad, when I think of how much time I used to spend in my dad's darkroom. We never did color, but he taught me to develop my own film, and make prints. We also used to do this thing when we were really little, where we would collect a bunch of stuff like leaves, or nuts and bolts, and scatter them onto photographic paper in the dark. Then my dad would turn on the light really fast, and expose the paper.

I miss the magic of watching the image appear slowly on the paper in the developing tray. :(

Cheers Moie. No, neither abandoned nor bombed. Its Newstead Abbey http://www.newsteadabbey.org.uk/ and the bit in the photo is the only surviving part of a 12th century priory. The Byron family were given it and they built a stately home around the ruins.

veggiesosage
11-28-2006, 11:08 AM
Not really. Its a combination of factors, it was a 30 sec exposure at night which does weird things with the sky, its a bit soft on detail because of some of the manipulation, its been converted to black and white etc. If you like the effect its a series of happy accidents, if not its a mess :D

Hey Andy, I see you've got "Copyright Veggiesosage" on your pictures now. Is that a legally binding copyright, if its not your real name? Though I suppose you could register yourself as "Doing business as Veggiesosage".

Do you have a link to these competitions? I can find them when I visit the DCM website.

veggiesosage
12-30-2006, 03:49 PM
The copyright thing is more to put people off trying to rip the pics off, ie who would want a pic with 'copyright veggiesosage' plastered all over it? Not that effective but its a sort of token effort. If I thought my pics had any real commercial value I'd probably put a bit more effort in. In any case, under most conditions, if I take the phot, I've got copyright over it anyway, I don't need to actually state it.

If you want to find the comps on DCM use the link to my gallery, click on 'forums' then go to the 'post your best here' thread. You'll find the latest 'weekend comp' thread in there along with a separate chat thread about it. There's also a 'rules' thread as a sticky.

You should join up and start entering its fun! :D

You know, it looks like a drawing. I could get that photoshop thing, take photographs, use the photoshop thing to make them look like drawings and then pass them off as my own art work. I could sell them on eba y or at flea markets as genuine works of art. I could even take commissions. People could send me their favourite photographs and I could 'draw' them. £12 a go for a genuine, hand drawn portrait or landscape.

Fauxmage
01-24-2007, 06:23 PM
Just make sure you take a stylus, or a dull knife-tip, or something similar, and make hatch-marks on the paper, so that it will look like some sort of actual drawing instrument was used. Or, take some clear acrylic gesso and paint it over the surface to make it look like a painting. ;)

How did you get that composition with the darkness yet the blinding blue iris? Mind you, I know nothing about photography. Do you have to contort yourself to get a clear, straight photo.

veggiesosage
03-16-2007, 08:06 PM
Well the first bit ie actually taking the photo I put my camera on a tripod and used my flash unit on a cable. I held the flash at right angles to my right then used a remote control to take the photo. That got the light on just one side. A remote isn't necessary, you could use the camera's own timer.

The rest is software. I used Photoshop Elements to first turn the photo into black and white then made another version concentrating on the colour of my eye. I then layered them both up and cut the iris out of the black and white version leaving the blue underneath.

Its magic honest :D

I took a four mile hike (at 11,000 feet elevation, argh!) through the Methuselah Grove, where the trees are over 4000 years old, and some of the debris on the forest floor has been shown to be 7000 years old, and as soon as I've sorted the pictures, I'll post more. Talk of the oldest living things in the world rerminded me of something I vaguely remember reading about as the largest living thing in the world. A quick google search found this, again in the US.

Formidable Fungus is World's Largest Organism

Mega mushroom expands in Oregon forest

by David Johnson

This article was posted on December 7, 2000.

(AP Photo/Oregon State University)

What is probably the largest living organism on earth has been discovered in the Malheur National Forest in eastern Oregon. A fungus living three feet underground is estimated to cover 2,200 acres. After testing samples from various locations, scientists say it is all one organism.

One Thousand Football Fields

Officially known as Armillaria ostoyae, or the honey mushroom, the fungus is 3.5 miles across and takes up 1,665 football fields. The small mushrooms visible above ground are only the tip of the iceberg.

Experts estimate that the giant mushroom is at least 2,400 years old, but could be 7,200 years old.

Previously, the world's largest organism was another Armillaria ostoyae, which covers a mere 1,500 acres near Mt. Adams in Washington state.

A Web of Tentacles

Scientists became interested in that section of forest when trees began to die. The honey mushroom uses tentacles, called rhizomorphs, to take water and nutrients from roots, killing trees.

The process benefits the ecosystem by creating clearings where new plants grow. Animals, such as woodpeckers, live in the dead tree trunks. Mushrooms also recycle nutrients

Dry Climate Helps

The dry climate of eastern Oregon discourages competition from new growth, leaving space for mushrooms already established.

Genetically Closer to People

In other research, scientists have determined that fungi are more closely related to human beings and animals than to other plants.

Moreover, while humans and most species are divided into only two sexes, mushrooms contain over 36,000 sexes.
infoplease.com/spot/fungus1.html

Anyway, science lesson over, I might stick a pic up later :D

Gliondrach

Black and white sometimes captures the essense of something better than colour. The colours can sometimes be a distraction. I'm not sure if I believe that - perhaps I'm tired and my mind is wandering.

Bowwowmeow
06-23-2007, 04:16 PM
That's quite true. While I was in Yosemite valley, I looked at the art studio. I was walking along one wall, admiring the photos, and came upon one that took my breath away. It was an Ansel Adams, and though all the photos I saw were beautiful and well done, he is a master, and to this day his work stands out from the work of more modern artists. His best work was in black and white.

That studia is now named The Ansel Adams Gallery, but it was originally named Best Studios, and Ansel Adams married the daughter of the studio's owner. A couple of his original photographs are for sale there; one for $25,000.00, and another for $35,000.00.

Excellent Andy! What effect does polarizing create?

veggiesosage
06-24-2007, 02:01 PM
It tends to block reflected light which is polarised in a different direction to direct light. As a result it darkens blue skies, generally increases saturation of colours and removes reflections from water and glass etc. Its one of those effects that you can't reproduce in Photoshop.
