They are really expensive. :wow: I have no idea why.

I don't know. I like black ones better anyway. There's a gourmet olive bar at the local farmer's market with some pretty pricey olives of many different colors.

I haven't noticed any difference in price here in Blighty. I'll check next time I am in the olive shop.

I used to hate olives but now I cant get enough of black pitted olives ...yum yum!! nice with hummus and seeds of different varieties, salad and pitta bread :)
Sainsbury's Pitted Kamalata olives may be the most divine olive ever created.

I'll be going shopping tomorrow. I'll see what the prices of green and black are. Not Green and Black's chocolate: green and black olives.

Because people pay that much for them, duh!

Change of plan - I'm not going shopping today. Too busy. Will go tomorrow. Or I might not.

I used to cure my own olives. It was fun! People use them for landscaping around here, and sometimes they get fruiting varieties by mistake instead of non-fruiting ones.
They are also extremely tasty if you wait for them to get all dry and wrinkly on the tree. You can eat them without curing the bitterness out then. I didn't believe that when I read it, but I tried one and its true.

You only get them in jars round here.

The cats I live with love black olives but turn their noses up at the green ones.

I've always love pasta tossed with olive oil, garlic, and parsley.

I sometimes have an olive oil sandwich. Just a scraping of margarine, then I pour some oil on and mix it in.

Has anyone ever tried queen olives? They are huge green olives, and are just delicious. I grew up on those strong tasting green olives with a red pepper in the middle. If you can find queen olives at a gourmet/import store, you might want to try them. Just delicious!

I adore olives so much, I could ask the same question. When I splurge I go to the olive bar at whole foods (the only good one I have and it's 2 hours away).
What I love about the 365 brand is that they have the non treated olives and there is NOTHING like tasting an olive without it. I thought olives were always good, but those non treated have FLAVOR like nothin else olive. Hands down.
I also love the canned Grabor olives. omg, they are good. Tree ripened. YUM
I also love the ones that look like rasions. You said Fauxmage that they can get that way on the tree?
I would LOVE a fruit bearing olive tree. But it's tricky in Texas. I am on the border of the best region for olives according to the professional olive tree Texas map.

If you're on the border of the best olive area, you should be able to grow almost best olives.
The only olives I've had are those soaked in brine. I need to rinse all the salty water off them.
Strange, I hadn't seen that post by Ecoguy! before.

Olives as food (http://www.rawfoodexplained.com/fats/the-use-of-fats-in-a-healthy-diet.html)
Olives are the only other fruit besides avocadoes that have a high fat content. They are a wholesome food only if eaten in their natural dried state. Unfortunately, sundried natural olives are very difficult to locate. Olives that are canned, bottled or pickled are indigestible and should not be eaten. Olive oil, while perhaps the potentially less harmful of all the free oils, has no place in the optimum diet.
Hmm. :rubchin:
