Do you suppose that insecticides applied to oats persist through this oat rolling process?
Rolled Oats are manufactured from oats which have been cleaned, dehulled, kilned (lightly roasted), steamed, and flaked
I'm also considering the following statement, circa 1979 (http://www.inchem.org/documents/jmpr/jmpmono/v079pr26.htm):
The processing of oats for the production of rolled oats, involving as it does the removal of the hulls and the heating of the kernel to produce groats, in the removal and destruction of substantially all the insecticide deposited on the grain for protection against stored product pests.

Do you think that is true today? Are organic oats worth nearly twice as much as non organics, as typically priced? :skeptical:

First of all i think its obscene, the prices they charge for organic food. Prior to WWII, all food was organic by default. Now its being treated like an exotic luxury.

I guess it would depend on whether the oats are treated with systemic chemicals, which cannot be washed off or removed, as they are incorporated into the vascular systems of the plants.

From the reports I've found, oats are treated post harvest.

Ok. Its hard to say whether chemicals have gotten safer since 1979 or not. And I actually prefer steel cut oats to rolled.

I found some data that's only 10 years old here: What's on my food? (http://www.thesaucyvegan.com/showthread.php?t=2200) It looks like the residues listed weren't found all that often, ten years ago.
:horse2: I eat them raw.

:tired: Jeez, taking another look at broccoli and sweet potatoes, they are potentially loaded with toxins!:skullncrossbones2:

Oh haha, I was just going to post those "What's on My Food" links myself. I just got an email featuring an article about that site. It might be a good idea to make a thread for that site.
