I'm going to try to make my own. That BBC telly series 'Grow Your Own Drugs' had a recipe for one. It included pine resin, lemon oil and other things. It is probably availiable on the BBC iPlayer to watch again. And there's the usual accompanying book. It was very interesting and showed how to make all sorts of creams and potions.

I think you could concoct something using tea-tree oil as it has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. It is bacteria that make the sweat pong.

There are a few recipes for deodorants on the following site. A couple of them call for beeswax but I believe shea butter (from the shea nut) can be used in its place.
beautyofbeauty.com/homemadedeodoeant.htm
Another site says:
What is a natural deodorant?
Natural deodorants are an environment-friendly answer to the problem of body order. In most natural deodorants ammonium alum is the chief ingredient. It is an organic compound abundantly found in nature and it encourages bacterio-static action reducing bacterial growth. Since alum molecules weigh almost 36 times more than water it is impossible for our skin to absorb them physically.
You can obtain these natural deodorants in the form of crystallized rock but they are also available in spray and roll-on forms.
Natural deodorants are strictly free of toxic components such as alcohol and aluminum. They are biodegradable and cruelty-free. Perfume is an optional ingredient and in most of the cases essential oils are added to make them scented.

This site (found in the wiki link) talks about the safety of ammonium alum:

The wiki entry says that potassium alum can also be used.

Hydrogen peroxide works. It kills the bacteria. I've read that an old trick used by fashion models is to use Listerine. I doubt its vegan though. I've never used it for anything. Its probably made by Proctor and Gamble, or some other nasty company. But its the antibacterial principle that works I think.
I like the ones made by Avalon. They make Lavender, Wild Yam, and Lemon, which are all very nice.

Those homebrew methods are questionable, for instance:
Baking Soda Powder and Cornstarch Mixture
Baking soda is an alkaline that helps in the rapid evaporation of sweat. To get a hundred percent natural deodorant make a mixture of equal quantities of baking soda and cornstarch. You can also add a few drops of essential oil to make it lightly scented. Apply on dry underarms.
Apply with what, tape? I mean, wouldn't it just bounce off? :magic:

I don't know but I saw that Lush makes some with cornstarch and other powders. I think you have to wet theirs.

Applied with a powder puff would work. Your sweat would activate it I should think. You probably don't need enough to create a cake or crust.

I like the idea of a more versatile deodorant, which can be applied one-handed, while driving, with a shirt on, as it often happens. I've been using cologne spray, but that's usually irritating. Anyway, I was wondering what actually works for others in a practical and healthy manner, at best. :driving:

Try one of those "crystals" or "rocks" then. They are usually composed of some sort of aluminum salt. A roll on or stick made by Avalon or Desert Essence ought to be convenient for use while driving too.

I've bought one of the crystal deodorant things. 'Salt of the Earth', made by Crystal Spring. It says it doesn't leave white marks on clothes.

I used the crystal wotsit today. Very good. When I arrived home there wasn't a trace of any pong. It has my seal of approval. :eat:

 What does it feel like? Is it sticky?
Gliondrach

No, it's not sticky. You don't even know you've put it on. You just wet it and apply it like a roll-on. It dries quickly.

Thanks. I've now heard from four or five people that those crystals are good.

That's what I use also. It's just a clear 'stone' that sits in it's own little tray. Kinda cute. lol. And no, it's not sticky, it's clear going on. I could do a commercial for em. No muss, no fuss, nothing harmed in the making of this product. :)
You do need water, so it's not good for driving.
Oh, and yes, it works GREAT.

The idea of applying it while driving reminds me of an episode of Mr Bean where he is late for something and brushing his teeth in the car. He spits the toothpaste out the window and it lands spang in the middle of some guy's plumber's crack.

He would be arrested if he cleaned his teeth and drove at the same time. A bloke was recently arrested for blowing his nose whilst driving.

I find the Co-op one stains my shirts. Although vinegar is supposed to be good to get those stains out. Haven't tried it yet.

You can buy liquid chlorophyll, which you take orally. It acts as a deodorant and is really good for you (chlorophyll also freshens your breath). My Grandmother uses it and says it works great for her.

Sounds interesting. I'd never heard of that use before. The crystal is doing its job though. I haven't noticed anyone moving away from me on buses. Except when I start talking to myself.

I haven't used the crystal for years, but recall it was effective. My food intake has cleaned up a lot so I've been able to use lotion as deoderant.
Has anyone tried something called, "scent of samadhi?" It is not cheap. I'm curious about it as I've heard that it smells wonderful, is vegan, all natural.

No I've never heard of it either. Now I am intrigued though. As long as it won't get the bees to fly up my dress. :p

Welcome Andrei.
I used to use Tom's of Maine. Very effective.
I bought the Dr Organics Lavender roll on deodorant in Holland + Barrett. It was £5ish. I've since found out that Superdrug have a vegan deodrant for 99p! Guess which on I'll be getting from now on :p
