'Wandering Wanda' Still on the Loose

From Associated Press
April 01, 2006 1:04 PM EST
NEWPORT, Ky. - "Wandering Wanda" the wild turkey just doesn't want to get caught. The bird is still on the loose within city limits in this northern Kentucky suburb of Cincinnati despite efforts by net-wielding residents and city officials.
Newport code enforcement officials have been trying to catch Wandering Wanda - a name PNC Bank workers gave the bird - for about two months.
"We are going to continue to try and pursue it and try and keep the public from getting involved," code enforcement director Brian Steffen said.
Steffen said the city is discouraging residents from helping with the turkey chase, especially after two men went after Wanda with a net in a parking lot and almost caused an accident.
PNC Bank employee Marintha Knight said someone else this week tried unsuccessfully to catch the turkey with a blanket.
"He eventually had enough and left," Knight said.
And Wanda might not be the only turkey in Newport. Newport Plaza worker Bethany Walker said two wild turkeys blocking a doorway made her late for work this week - she waited 20 minutes for them to leave instead of trying to scare them away.
"Every time I walked to the door, they would start doing a turkey noise," Walker told The Cincinnati Enquirer. "I called my district manager to say I was late to clock in because of wild turkeys."

I hope none of these fearless, capable folks ever find themselves stranded on a desert island with nothing else there but wild turkeys to eat. They'll either die of heart attacks caused by chasing the poor turkeys or just plain being scard of them!

People are scared of cows, too, you know. We used to encounter lots of cows when we went on geology field trips. Whenever a cow or two would slowly change direction and start coming our way, everybody started running. I always remember this when I come across some omni carrying on about how we were meant to eat meat because of our teeth etc. I'd sure like to see one of those people try their teeth out on a real live cow.

Heck, I'd settle for seeing one of them stand still while the cow came towards him without bolting in the opposite direction or peeing his pants. :D

No weapons allowed, of course.

Vain Wild Turkey Adopts Small Town Cafe

From Associated Press
April 04, 2006 6:18 PM EDT
CULDESAC, Idaho - Rufus the wild turkey has discovered the parking lot of a restaurant is a good place to get a meal - as long as he's careful not to become one. "He doesn't come inside," cook Kristie McDaide told the Lewiston Tribune. "I'd throw him right in my pot."
Rufus is the last member of a five-bird flock that appeared in the area in October, eating grain that blew off semi trucks. He eventually discovered that food was easier to come by in the parking lot of the Jacques Spur Junction Cafe.
Rufus' pluck and boldness apparently carried him through Thanksgiving as diners feasted on turkey while watching Rufus in the parking lot. Now, area residents consider him something of a pet.
"He's a vain bird," said Brian Heinzerling, co-owner of the restaurant. "He's not shy either. The other day, I practically had to shut his beak in the door or he would have followed me in."
Rufus' reputation has spread far enough to make him a tourist attraction.
"People have heard of him in other towns, Heinzerling said. "They stop in all the time to check him out."
"I've never seen a wild turkey you can pet before," said Mary Ann Mathison of Craigmont, who stopped in for a cup of coffee with her husband, Ralph.
Rufus checks them out as well, walking up to car doors to look inside, beguiling restaurant patrons into sharing their leftovers with him when they leave.
Rufus, however, is a discriminating eater, turning down broccoli and cracked corn, but accepting grapes, sunflower seeds and leaves.
"He's a naturalist," said Nancy Coleman, who lives next to the cafe.
French fries are OK, though.
"Not too long ago, a kid ordered French fries to go," Heinzerling said. "I asked if he wanted ketchup or napkins. He said, 'No, thanks. They're for the turkey.'"
Rufus looks both ways before crossing the highway, waitress Karah Armstrong said. But locals are a little more concerned for Rufus when turkey hunting season opens April 15.
"Well, we've certainly got no plans for turkey dinner," said Paula Heinzerling.

Reminds me of the scene in "The Egg and I" where Claudette Colbert refuses to eat the ham at the party because she knew the pig when he was alive. I hope being around such an animal makes people think about what they are doing to all the ones they haven't made friends with yet. :sigh:

I too have found people to be scared of cows. There was a cow near to where I was once lived and I used to go and stroke and talk to it daily. They are such gentle creatures and I love that soft bit of fur above their nose :agree:

Please pardon my ignorance ... but can someone explain why people are scared of cows and turkeys? Hell, human beings scare me a lot more than animals ever have - and with good reason. :agree:

I think it is possibly because they don't have any interactions with these animals normally, don't understand them and can't read their body language! :rubchin:

Some people are even like that with dogs. They don't understand that dogs tell you how they feel through their eyes, ears and tails for example. :doggy:

I think they fear animals because they sense in their subconcious minds that the animals know, and want revenge! :boil:
