Walkers Crisps >insert sad face<

Crisps, eh? Few things sort out a hangover better, or give an elusive magical texture/taste sensation to what could otherwise be a boring sandwich (although Fry's polony slicing sausage has worked wonders!) than Walkers Salt & Vinegar crisps - which I understood to be vegan.

However I noticed today (after finishing a bag, obviously...) that they have recently changed the ingredients - the Salt & Vinegar flavouring now contains milk derivatives. Gutted. Must've been changed in the last fortnight or so.

Kudos to them for clearly stating "now contains milk" and adding a "check my ingredients!" graphic to the front of the bag, but it still seems unecessary and disappointing that they'd randomly start adding milk for no obvious reason.

Thought I'd post an "FYI" in case anyone else was still eating these without realising they'd lost their (albeit unintentional) supposed vegan credentials.

It might just be a case of needing to warn those who are allergic to milk that they might contain milk. If they are made with equipment that's used to make other things with milk there could be traces of milk on the equipment. Maya Gold chocolate used to say that it 'may contain traces of milk', but now it says that it does contain milk.

You can't beat plain crisps with a little blue bag of salt.

I reckon it's a deliberate recipe change unfortunately - it's more than a token "may contain milk" nod that some manufacturers use.

It lists a lactose product and dried/powdered milk as two of the ingredients in the flavouring and the "now contains milk" comment is in bold.

If it were down to trace ingredients/shared production lines such as in "Green & Blacks" case, the milk products would probably be listed as the final ingredients to show they are added in the lowest quantity.

I've had a reply! Apparently these are up-to-date as of May 2009.

Interestingly the French Fries used to contain milk so I guess it's promising that this list claims they don't anymore.

Having said that, it's a strange world where some "meat" flavoured crisps are suitable for vegans while salt & vinegar aren't.

I was upset until I saw this in the vegan list "Walkers Worcester Sauce Flavour Crisps". I feel a bit better now.

I was gutted when I found out their sweet chilli crisps had milk in. But also glad, cuz I could scarf a whole big bag of those on my own!!
