Dont know whats up with Jed - hes really not himself at the mo.
Was fine Fri, we went out for a meal in the eve only left him 2 hours or so got back 9pm and he is a social eater so had his dinner then.
Overnight he was restlessand wouldnt sleep on his bed but on the floor by my bed. I thought he was sulking as hes not use to being left in the evenings.
Sat am - all shaking/clingy would not eat/drink/go out and was very withdrawn. He did go out for his walk and seemed ok but got back here and he took ages to get into the house as sat on the drive refusing to shift.
He will only eat if we hand feed him and spent all night in the corner of my room.
I wonder if he is 'bunged up' as not been to the loo, or maybe his legs are hurting him.
Hate it when I dont know whats wrong, will go to the vets if needed but will have to carry him to the car the way he is. We have rimadyl here but if he does walk he is not limping but he is hardly walking anywhere.
He does do a lot of 'attention seeking' when ill and the vet says he knows how to play on it as he only goes all trembly when people are about.
Hopefully he will improve soon - wish I knew what was up - wonder if he needs some type of laxative to get him going? I do think that may be the problem.
Anyone know of any remedies to try?

I don't know at all Alison :( I hope he's okay.
If it is tummy troubles would he let you put a hot water bottle/wheat bag on him? That may soothe him a little.
I've never had a dog, so I don't know much. :(

I hope Jed is better soon. I'll send some thoughts.
This site has some info that might be useful:
http://www.petplace.com/dogs/constipation-in-dogs/page2.aspx
This site says that pet shops stock mild 'natural' laxatives for dogs. It also suggests giving some bran in the food to increase fibre.
petpeoplesplace.com/resources/advice/dogs/112.htm
Have a look at onlynaturalpet.com for an example of a laxative. It is an American site but similar things will be on sale here. Type laxative in the search thing at the top left of the home page.

Thanks both, hes had a walk this am as I cant temp him out to the garden but he never turns down a walk and 95% of the time will do his 'business' whilst out. Hes managed another small amount today and seems a little better now, has asked for one of his veggie chew sticks so must be feeliing a bit better.
We are due to go to the vets soon for his yearly check up so might bring that forward to this week.
I think we need to get his weight down as he could do with losing a bit - being a little overweight wont help him I know.
Will have a look at the links now thanks:thumbsup:

I hope Jed is Ok soon xxx
Do you think he has a fright of some sort?
Or if you think he is bunged up, is he swollen around that area as sometimes dogs get swollen anal glands (sorry not very nice topic !!!) which makes them sore and upset!! This is common in dogs and I know two of my dogs in the past had problems with this here and there. They usually scrape their bums along the ground to help them release them!!

Hello am pleased to say Jed seems to be improving a bit.
Hes had a bit of food and plenty of water and his stomach does not seem so solid now hes been to the loo!
We thought he had anal gland trouble in the past but vet checked and he was ok, will get them checked when he goes in the week. We have had no scooting on the floor!
Dad wondered if he was in one mega sulk with us for leaving him Friday eve - he really hates fireworks and we did wonder if there had been one? Id of expected him to knock things over if he heard one, he seemed fine on our return. Take a way next time me thinks or a lunch out as hes ok left for a couple of hours in the day.
Very strange - do wonder if he was just bunged up or just well miffed with us? One of those things we will not ever find out I suppose.
He could of had a bit of arthritis with all the damp/cold weather of late, vet did say after his cruciate ligament op he will be prone to it.
Mystery staffie:rolleyes:just glad he seems a bit better:thumbsup:

I'm glad he's better! It could have been a temporary blockage. Sometimes stress can cause them too, not just what they eat.

Giving dogs bran is not safe, especially if a blockage is suspected. A dog can die if bran is added when there is already a blockage. Oils are the best natural laxatives for dogs. Coconut oil or milk is especially good, though any oil will do, as long as it is a food oil, and not mineral oil.
Canned pumpkin is an excellent food to add for extra fiber on a daily basis. :pumpkin:

Il look into oils for him, he really seems ok again now - It does seem to be a blockage as he did seem to have a very solid feeling tum but now hes been twice he feels more normal - maybe he got stressed when we were out Fri night? He does get stressed by fireworks/sudden loud noises/heavy rain/thunder so maybe he heard something whilst we were out?
Doubt Il ever know but just glad he seems better!

Yeah, my Daisy hates fireworks and thunder too. She shakes like a leaf and tries to hide under things. There's no telling what poor Jed might have heard while you were out. Lots of people around here light off firecrackers and other illegal fireworks quite near the boat, and this upsets her too.

Its so annoying all these fireworks and increased noise these days:disbelief:
Typical we hardly ever leave Jed in the eves after dark:rolleyes:
Hes fast asleep in his basket now and seems fine, but going to book his yearly health check this week just so the vet can check him over, make sure all is ok.

Glad to hear Jed's doing better
If you suspect a blockage again the best thing to use is liquid parafin from the chemist. My elder dog is prone to blockages and the vet uses liquid parafin to help soften it up.

I spoke too soon, just phoned to check how jed is as Im now going to meet friends for a meal after work and Mum says he is like he was Sat - all shivery and lethargic.
Vets booked for 6pm tomorrow, as the vet who knows him the best is on then.
I wont be out long tonight so I can get home to him, but parents with him now.
Hope we get this sorted soon such a worry!

If it's come on again after seeming to get better it might be a virus. I hope Jed fights it off soon. Staffies are tough.

Been to vets, Jed was not impressed especially by the thermometer!!!
Vet says he has a bacterial infection and conjuntivitis, he said it could be a kidney infection and has prescribed antibiotics - wondered if Jed had bumped his head as slight bruising. He has a raised temperature. Vet said he doubted it was parvo or anything like that.
He also noticed that one of Jeds testicles is bigger than the other and wants to keep an eye on it - said it could be a tumour in there - but will deal with that in the future if needed.
I hate hearing the word tumor:no:
So the vet expects a good improvment in 48 hours - if not got to go back Fri, if not next apointment in around 10 days.
He seems a bit better today - more interested in things but is in a bit of a sulk with me for taking him to the vets.
Will keep you posted on things - hopefully he will improve soon.

Time for a Jed update!
Pleased to report that Jeds doing well - seems back to his usual staffie self - on antibiotics til Sun dont think we will need another vets visit until 5 days after his tablets so will book that soon, he is due his annual health check and vaccination then.
So so far so good, still got the concern over his bits and worry of a tumor there but will just see what the vet says about that as still at the 'keeping an eye on' stage.

Hello I had spoken too soon about Jed being well and hoping he did not get ill again....
Hes had kennel cough for 3 weeks and been really ill with it and fed up, hes lost 2kg in 3 weeks and has been very depressed and off food/withdrawn.
Trying more antibiotics after a vets visit Sun and he does seem a little better now.
If no better by next Mon then vets suggested more tests - chest xrays as worried its heart disease:sigh:
I really hope he improves soon, fed up and stressed here from seeing how ill he has been, cant even manage his walks/food very well at the mo.
Hes coming with us on holiday to Dorset coast at Easter so need him well by then so he will cope with the long journey and can enjoy the sea air/beach walks.
Holiday not being discussed as if we cant go it will cause further stress here.

If the anti-biotics don't work you could look for complementary therapies. This is interesting, although I'm not completely convinced that homeopathy works:
alternativevet.org/dog-diseases.htm#kennel mentions a clinical trial into kennel cough. It ends with:
Discussion
The above data appear to show:
a) a remarkable response to nosode preventive therapy.
b) a positive response even though the preventive dosage was ‘post-exposive’.
c) a negative effect from prior vaccination with kennel cough vaccine*, on all parameters measured.
d) a continuing infective presence, as witnessed by the appearance of mild and transient symptoms in some of the dogs throughout the trial period. This means that the good results cannot be attributed to a coincidental disappearance of the infective agents, concurrent with homeopathic input.
*vaccines recorded were ‘Enduracell 7’ and ‘Intrac’.

Im afraid Its sad news - Jeds passed away tonight, not sunk in yet but just glad I was with him, he was really not well not since Jan, so knew this might be something we had to face but just not so soon. You want them to go on forever but just not possible I know. At least it was quick and he wont have to go through all the tests and things the vets were planning.
