When we come across something that could help a fellow vegan it would be a good idea to post it here.

This was sent to me in an e-mail 2 days ago. This person lives in the Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, Cambrigde area. I didn't know if I should mention the e-mail address but I can put anyone interested in touch.

FREE TO VEGANS.
One fridge freezer.....excellent condition.

One washing machine.....very good condition.

One big two seater sofa with matching chair in burnt orange. Cost £3000 brand new four years ago. Needs a bit of a clean but a great solid sofa.

Whoever wants these items, picks them up.

Very noble. I could use the washing machine. Could you be helpful and pick it up, convert it to 110V and ship it to the US?

I would and could but you're not allowed to have one in your place of abode.

Where's the rebel in you?

If I lived in such an appartment, I sure would consider to sneak one in and connect it to the bathroom tap and sink.

I really don't understand why washingmachines aren't allowed in some buildings......

I was wondering why they aren't allowed but, just at this very second, I've come to the conclusion that it might have something to do with the noise. I can sometimes hear my neighbours' washing machine at midnight. It's not very loud but I can hear it.

The management company pays the water bill, we just pay electric and cooking gas, so unless they changed the utility arrangements, it would be too expensive for the owners. There are over 400 apartments where we live.

I have "collective water" too.

One meter for 8 appartments, I pay a monthly advance in the total rent. At the end of a year, the water company reads the meter, sends it to the housing association, they divide it by 8, and charge or pay me back, depending on the average use.

I don't think noise would be the problem, modern washers don't make that much noise, and most houses aren't that quiet anyway (noise from the street etc)

I wouldn't like to have to share the water costs with other people. I use as little as possible - within reason - and wouldn't want to pay for someone who uses a lot.

Then you absolutely shouldn't live in apartment buildings.
It is imho something that dates from the times that water was so cheap that giving every house it's own meter was considered too expensive.

We don't pay for water now at all but say they allowed washing machines and started charging us for water, we're a family of 4 which is quite unusual in our complex so our water usage would be much higher than the average apartment size of 1. I'd be upset if I was another tenant and had to pay the same amount as us for water.

I've been informed that the things have been snapped up. All gone.

Where I work now, and the place I worked before, it was just

Total of water : nr. of apartments = costs per apartment.

No correction for family size. In the big picture, your extra water usage would just "disappear" when spread over all the units.

One can think that's unfair, but family size doesn't say much about water usage per unit.
