View Full Version : Anonymous Outbound Linking to Other Websites

Hey everyone! We now have anonymous linking to other websites. When one of us clicks on a link here, our address gets logged at that website, and makes it possible for someone from that website to follow us back here. I have installed script that will keep our address private if we, for instance, want to link to something really obnoxious like the Weston Price or Chet Day websites, but don't want them to know we are doing it from here. We can also link to obnoxious material at other forums, and they won't be able to follow us back and complain.
So, if you want to see what happens, try clicking on this Blogthing (http://www.blogthings.com/whatpartoffallareyouquiz/). You will get a black page with a message to "please wait while you are being directed to. . ." in several languages, the URL of the page you want, and some links to the website which provides this service. Give it a try!
I have excluded our own domain, so that when we link to other threads (http://www.thenakedvegan.net/showthread.php?t=532) on our own forum, the links are direct and the anonymous page won't appear.

Please do check links whenever you see them, even if you have clicked on them before, and let me know if there are any problems with any of the different skins you might be using.

I tried it, too. :) Got the black page and then it switched to an actual blogthing.
Is that what was supposed to happen? :rubchin:

We have anonymous outbound links activated again. I haven't bothered since we went through so many upgrades and problems, because it has to be redone each time there is an upgrade, and it has to be done separately to each skin, which is a bit of a time consumer. Its back now though, which means that when someone clicks on a link here, the people who own the site won't know its us.
If you have a link in your siggie to your own website, and want to post a link to our forum on your site, let me know, and I will exempt your site from the anonymous linking.

Is anyone seeing the anonymto site redirecting them when they navigate within the forum? This is not supposed to be happening, and it is not happening for me. I am using the "Earth, Sea, and Sky" skin, and its functioning properly.
If anyone is seeing the redirect page while navigating from page to page here at the forum, let me know, and tell me which skin you are using so I can fix it. Each skin has to be edited separately.
Thanks!

I think this may be a problem with your browsers folks. I am not seeing this happen to me in any of the skins. Try the refresh button, and if that doesn't work, try clearing your browser's cache, or restarting your browser.

I have tried different skins and I have not had the problem so far. :updn:

I forgot to remember to use firefox to log in. The forum is very slow for me this time and freezes for a few seconds. I blame the EU.

Im afraid Ive got this and am finding it really tricky as its taking ages to get to any posts so Im not on the forum much as cant work out how to get rid of it and dont know how to alter things or what a cache is to clear or what firefox is - think ive only got my internet explorer here? I restarted my pc but that did not work, got it on works pc aswell!
It takes ages to get to posts and makes me annoyed with myself I cant alter it:rolleyes:

Okay I have disabled it in "Gray", "Standard", "Earth, Sea, and Sky", and "Dusk". No one should be seeing the redirect page at all after this. If you still are, I'll have to try to help you figure out how to clear your browser's cache!
I will be reinstalling it though, because it shouldn't be doing this, and its a handy feature to have. The first time I put it in we didn't have this trouble. I'm going to wait though until I have heard from those of you who are having this problem, to make sure it has cleared off the forum.
Alison, there is a window at the bottom left of the forum that is called "Style Chooser", where you can see the different backgrounds we have. You can also go into your User CP, look under "Options", and at the bottom of the page, you will see a section about the forum skins. If you see one you like, you can make it your permanent choice.
I do like to switch skins on holidays, and some people don't like the holiday skins, so having a skin of your own, instead of "forum default", will keep you from seeing the skins I switch to on special occasions. "Gray" is the name of our forum default.

Alison, if you right click on the internet explorer icon on your screen, and then left click on 'properties' you can clear your browsing history, cookies, and temporary internet files. Left click on 'delete' and then left click on those three things in turn. Left click on 'yes' when it asks. Don't click on 'delete' when you first do the right click on the icon. Only when you have clicked on 'properties'.

Thanks Il have a look at the different skins, the grey is fine for me. Its much quicker to get to posts now:)

I'm going to give adding this function another try within the next few days. I'll add it to one of the other skins first, before I add it to the forum's default, and hopefully some of you can try it in that skin and tell me if it isn't working, before I add it to all of them.

Ok, I have added this function back to the following skins:
Standard
Earth, Sea, and Sky
Spring
I have checked them all, and they seem to be functioning normally. Navigating from one page to the next within the forum is working fine, but links to other sites are going through anonym.to, as they should.
Please try these skins, and let me know if it is working! You can test it by clicking on the links in the first post of this thread, after you select on of these skins from the Style Chooser at the bottom left corner of the main page. Thanks!

I get straigtht through to other threads on this forum and also to blogthings with all three skins.
The screen goes white for a couple of seconds but it does it for both the other threads and the blogthings.
I tried the Hallowe'en skin just in case. Same thing there.
Then I realised that 'grey' is not the standard skin. I tried the standard and it gave the anonymiser when I clicked on blogthings.
But not with the Spring and the Earth, Sea and Sky.

How odd. It used to work perfectly before the last few upgrades. I wonder why its causing trouble now.
I haven't added it to any other skins yet, besides those three mentioned.

Let's see what other people experience. I haven't tried it using firebox yet. I'll do that later because it will mean logging out of various things.

Yes, probably this daft AO L I use. Even though I am supposed to have tyrefox as my default browser. But it seems to be IE7 that is used.

Ok I went ahead and edited all our skins. Let me know if you have trouble navigating within the forum, because diverting through anonym.to is not supposed to happen.
Let me know if there are any websites, particularly your own, you want excluded from the diversion. I don't mind direct links to sites that are important to our members. :)

You must have a lot of patience, Vinnie. Or a different type of firefox. When I click on a link to the blogthings thing I can't use the back button to get back here. I have to close firefox, open it again, type in saucyvegan and then log back in. And then find the thread again. That happens even when I click on a link to another thread in this forum. The browser I usually use, whatever it is, allows me to click the back button to get back where I was.
I've only done about half of the skins. It's taken me two days so far.

When you click a link and go to another site you just need to click the tab at the top with the original site's name on it. Or close the tab at the top with the new site's name on it. If you don't close the new site tag and you go to a lot of them you'll have lots of tags to close.

I knew that really. I was just waiting for someone to point it out. I like testing people.
I'll go ahead and do the others now. Even though I really knew how to do it before. :updn:
