View Full Version : Forum Styles (aka Skins)

We've got several skins with which to view the forum now. My new favorite is "Brimstone" (on account of the flaming logo- I am quite a pyro! :flame:). I have just created a new one for Valentine's Day, which I will make the default style in a few days in honor of the holiday. Enjoy!

The brimstone skin doesn't seem to be working correctly, there's one of those image x's (my lack of computer skills rise again) on the right side.

Hehe! I don't know what those red Xes are called either!
There seems to be a bug that prevents me from changing button images immediately. I deleted the old images, but it took a long time for them to disappear before I could upload new ones. It seems to be a web-hosting bug, and not a site bug, though.
There's so much to learn its making me dizzy! :dizzy:

I have made the Valentine's Day skin our default in honor of the holiday. I'll change it back again after. You can still pick your own favorite if the Valentine's Day skin is too pink. I kind of like it, myself. :smallheart:

I don't know. I have no trouble with it, but I am sure everyone's eyes are different. I like those dark/black backgrounds in Brimstone and Celestial because the colors look like electric lights! But switching to a lighter one is kind of like turning on the lights after one has seen a movie or a slide show at school. :dark: I won't ever make them default skins, though, becasue I know some folks find those styles difficult to look at.

I think your suggestions for Berries'nDream are beautiful, Rainbow! And, looking at all the fruit icons I had to search through to find some cute berries made me so hungry I had to make myself a berry fruit salad with blueberries, strawberries, banana, coconut milk, and agave nectar. :eat: I know the berries are out of season, but they have been featuring them for Valentine's Day, right at the entrance to the store, and the smell of strawberries is intoxicating. I had to give in and get some! :mdrama:

Thanks vegantwins! I like them too. I also like the burning sun and the moon phases in "Celestial". That flying seagull in "Beach" is one of my favorites, though. I don't exactly know why there are collapse and expand buttons for the forum, but they give me a good place to put a seagull, or a twinkling star.

Thanks everybody! Whew, I just finished "Underwater". It took longer than most. It took a bit of trial_and_error to figure out how to replace the colored sections with the watery wallpaper tiles! The light font seemed easier for me to read than dark did, but let me know if dark would be better.
I have replaced the "Quote", "Edit", and "Quick Reply" buttons with fish and bubbles. Just hover over the image with your cursor for a moment, and it will tell you which is which, although if you are familiar with VBulletin it shouldn't be too confusing. I just wanted lots of bubbles and fish swimming about.

It wasn't just the cuddly dogs and bunnies that I loved when I was little. I loved the toads and frogs in the back yard, and caterpillars, ants, bees, butterflies, and those funny little critters that roll up into a perfect ball when you disturb them. Fortunately my parents weren't worried about me catching things from playing with the bugs, so I grew up without fear of any of our invertebrate friends.

I should explain to those who may not know how that you can go into your User CP, select "Options", and at the very bottom of the page there is a box entitled "Forum Skins". You can choose whichever one you like as your default skin, instead of the forum default, which is usually "Gray", but changes for holidays and special occasions.

Yes, and if they are all hairy man-nipples we won't have to worry about minors seeing them after all.
I might just do this, if I can find a set of images with fig leaves on and off to show whether there are new posts in the forum on the main page.

The "Underwater" skin is ready. I guess it should be considered for "advanced" users, since all of the buttons are replaced by swimming fishies. Just hover your cursor over an image and wait for the description to appear.
I get so distracted by the pretty fish I forget what I am reading and writing.

"St Patrick's Day" is done. "April Fool's Day" is too, but its not in the selector, just in case we get some new people by next April 1 who will enjoy being fooled.
I've got five more to finish, but I need a break! I also can't edit them in the Style Manager anymore, as there is some sort of error occurring. I'll have to see if I can figure this out. I'll probably go ahead with the upgrade tomorrow anyway, and see if that takes care of the errors.

I'm almost done with "Christmas". Oracl can see it, but no one else can. I won't put it on the list til I finish. I'm not sure whether the mods can see it if I don't put it in the list.
Its funny, because though I can't call myself Christian anymore, I still love Christmas, but more as a winter solstice kind of thing. Many of the customs came from older traditions than Christianity, and I am still very fond of the icons, even though they don't mean the same thing to me that they do to most people. Its more of a happy-childhood-memories and loving-to-give-presents-to-people kind of thing for me.
I still believe in Santa Claus too. :shy:

I still have fond memories of Christmas even though it means little to me now. It is much too commercial. It was when I was a nipper but it is much worse now. The shops are places of madness in the month before. I like Christmas trees with dark red, dark blue, dark green and dark amber lights. No other colours. We never had a tree but I always liked them. I might get one one day. If I can get the proper lights. And not made in a certain country.

I changed it back. I also did this multiquote while I was using this skin, and it worked fine for me. What browser do you use? That's the only thing I can think of, when its not actually the forum software acting funny for everyone. Tell me your browser and ISP, and I'll submit the problem to Tech Support and see what they have to say.

My favorite button, logo, and gradient site is back online, so I have finished the rest of our skins, which are now all available. I totally trashed "Spring" and "Summer", so I will redo those. I'm getting a little better with gradients. "Celebrate" has got a few, and so does "Autumn", and "Beach" actually has waves, and much nicer sandy backgrounds. "Beach" has always been one of my most favorite, next to "Celestial".

Thanks dreamer! Its like decorating the rooms in your house, which is something I used to love to do when I lived in houses with rooms. :painting:
Don't forget folks, if you don't like the defaults I choose for holidays, you can always go into your user cp and set a permanent skin to override it. I realize that many are colorful, like "Valentine's Day" :flirt: , and some people have a hard time with the colors. I am nearsighted, but for some reason I have no trouble reading the forum in any of the skins, and the colors don't bother my eyes at all, but I know some folks are sensitive to them, or to high contrast.

"Spring" is done. Its another one for the "advanced" user. I love the hummingbird hovering near the columbines, which are the buttons for quoting and editing.
I'm glad to have gotten "Spring" and "Autumn" done in time for the equinox, since some of us are expecting autumn in a few weeks, and others are expecting spring. :) :updn:
Some of these skins have a funny effect on me. If I use the "Winter" style during a heat wave, it gives me a welcome chill, which is why I avoid using it in the winter! When I am freezing, I look at "Brimstone", and the flames and glowing coal effects warm me right up. The mind is a very curious thing. :rubchin:
