Hullo, long time no see... the user Alien from the ALF forums asked me to ask why members registration is off (he can't register). The reason for his registering is he can't seem to login into his old account on here.
He can't ask for his password because he cannot remember what email or user name he used in sign up with the old account.
P.s. I won't be online for long as I've a guest staying at the house so please can this remain in a guest viewable part of the forum so Alien can see any replies. Tah.

I checked myself, and yes, registering is currently disabled :)
the main reason for that will be that some how loads of spam bots are trying to register in certain periods.
And to not have the board flooded by bots that come to offer us Viagra and the like, the administrator does "manual validation" after a person registers.
If the admin is on a short leave, she sometimes disables registration, so she won't be flooded with bot-registrations when she returns.
I'm sure that as soon as the admin reads this, registration will be open again, and might even sent ChenLi a Private message to let her now "Alien" can register :)

Yeah, I shut it off again to catch up with the whammers. I wish they were bots, because then they couldn't register without looking at that weird code and confirming it. I believe that actually takes a human being to recognize the wavy letter and numbers, and then typing them into the box.
Anyway, I'll turn it on, and I believe I can send Alien a message about his/her account.

The Registration process is still all messed up. I am turning it off again for at least a week, until I can figure out how to fix it. I've got other things right now that are more important, so this is last on my list. I also don't need to be distracted by whammer deletion when I've got other jobs to do.

I've shut registration off again. I'm going to be away all next week anyway, and I don't want to have to delete the 75 to 100 spam accounts that will inevitably be opened while I am gone.

I wonder how many whammers I'll have to delete tomorrow morning if I turn registration back on again tonight.

At least one new person joined today and three are registering right now, two guests and hibiormanna. Why is one named and the other two not?

I hate to say this but I think one of the reasons you get so many whammers is cos its called the 'Naked' vegan. It probably attracts all the porn spambots.
Change the name to the 'Parka and comfy pants clad Vegan' and I reckon your life will be much easier :D
At least until the very specific fetish sites find it...

Several other forums have been getting swamped too, including one of our favorites. They've been shutting down registration for long periods of time in order to stop it. I have noticed that Everything Vegan doesn't seem to be getting any though, which is peculiar. Vegan Buddies had to go offline on account of being overwhelmed with spam while poor Neil was in the hospital. I haven't checked them lately to see if they are up and running again.

EV is on Proboards which is a fully online system so I suspect Proboards have ways of reducing spam. Also, the web address of the forum itself is pretty obscure which probably helps.

I think their harder to read security code is a factor too, it has lines trough the letters/numbers, what makes it harder to read for machines.

I've made the Image Verification as complicated as is available. I banned a ton of whamming email addresses, using Aggressive Email Banning. I've also added a whole bunch of new stuff to our User Agreement, which you can see if you log out and click the Register link. I've sorted users into their proper categories according to whether they have posted yet, and fixed up the automatic usergroup people get put in when they activate their registration. It wasn't straightforward, but now people who activate their registration go straight into the moderated usergroup "Users Who Haven't Posted", where they will stay, with limited viewing and posting permissions, until they make their introductory post in the appropriate forum. This will keep non-vegan troublemakers in line, and reduce the number of people who join just to lurk.
I've also messed about with User Titles. If you've got less then 100 posts, you are now a "Noob". Over that, and you are an official "Naked Vegan!". If you don't like it, you can choose your own custom title. Those who have custom titles keep them. If you don't like having anything, you can put a ".", or a "_____", or something like that, if you don't want to see "Noob" or "Naked Vegan!" above your avatar, and don't want to make anything up to replace it.
Well done and good idea, you have been busy again.
its much appreciated.

Yes, well done. But I think noobs should be all those who have less than 5,000 posts.

Maybe I should make a list of body parts instead, like "Foot" for 0 to 50 posts, "Knees", "Belly Button", and so on. :wigglebutt:
I was happy to find no whammers had joined over night. I was expecting about 6. :crossfingers:  I don't think they'll be stopped completely, but I was getting tired of having my emailbox swamped with notification emails for new "members". :shakehead:

I will be going camping in Yosemite again, starting next Sunday the third of May. I will shut off registration during this time, to avoid having new members experience the frustration of not having their accounts activated. I'll turn it back on when I get home. :)
