FDA recalls Veggie Booty snacks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Veggie Booty, a snack particularly popular among small children, may carry Salmonella food poisoning and should be thrown out, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.

The FDA said on Thursday at least 52 people in 17 states had become sick after eating the green-colored snack food marketed by Robert's American Gourmet. The New Jersey-based company said it had temporarily stopped making and selling the snack, which contains spinach, kale and other vegetables.

"Almost all the illnesses have occurred in children under 10 years old, with the most cases in toddlers. Most persons had reported bloody diarrhea; four were hospitalized," the FDA said in a statement.

"Veggie Booty is often consumed by children, so parents are encouraged to watch their children, and seek medical care if they observe signs of illness," the FDA added.

It said people who have recently eaten the snack and experienced symptoms should contact a doctor.

Salmonella infection usually causes diarrhea, often bloody, with abdominal cramps and fever. It can be life-threatening in infants, persons with poor underlying health and those with weakened immune systems.

The U.S. Centers for Disease control estimates that about 300,000 Americans each year are hospitalized with food-borne illnesses and 5,000 people die.

Robert's American Gourmet is recalling all potentially contaminated product, which is sold in all 50 states and Canada. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a similar warning.

The company said its other products were safe. It posted a Web site about the recall at http://www.robscape.com/files/veggie-booty-recall.php.

"Due to the serious nature of the health risk, Robert's has decided to temporarily stop the manufacture and sale of Veggie Booty only until test results can positively identify the source," the company said on the Web site.

"We stand by our snacks and hope to resume making Veggie Booty shortly," it said.

The recall is ONLY for this products, other products by the same company are safe :)

We don't eat Veggy Booty but the kids eat Super Veggie Tings. Fortunately, we don't have any in the house at the moment. I think I'll stick with homemade popcorn for now.

Investigation into tainted snack points to seasonings imported from China as root of salmonella poisonings

July 4, 2007

The Sea Cliff company that produces Veggie Booty, which has been linked to the salmonella poisoning of more than 50 people nationwide, said yesterday that seasonings imported from China had likely contaminated its recalled snack food.

Also yesterday, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture said salmonella had been found on a sample of the snack food.

The potential link to China in the case could be the latest problem in the importation of contaminated foodstuffs from that nation into the United States.

In recent weeks problems have arisen in the contamination of fish and pet foods entering the country from China.

U.S. State Department officials who have been dealing with the recent cases of contamination could not be reached for comment.

But one source said U.S. officials have been specifically discussing the Veggie Booty problem with Chinese officials.

The acknowledgments of links between the salmonella epidemic and the snack food, which is aimed at youngsters, came in a news release issued by the company, Robert's American Gourmet.

The company press release said it had been informed yesterday by the Minnesota Department of Health that a sample of Veggie Booty tested positive for the rare strain salmonella Wandsworth. Officials in Minnesota could not be reached immediately to confirm the account.

The federal Food and Drug Administration last week issued a recall of Veggie Booty, and the company on Monday recalled its Super Veggie Tings, a snack aimed at adults that contains the same seasoning.

No illnesses have been linked to Veggie Tings.

In the news release, the company said its own independent testing of samples of the seasoning indicates "that it is the likely cause [of the salmonella poisoning].

"Sources of origin on all components of the seasoning have been determined to be primarily from China."

An additive had been suspected because the cooking of the cereal products that make up most of the Veggie Booty should have killed any bacterial contamination, according to sources familiar with the investigation.

The seasoning is combination of various dried vegetables, including spinach, kale, carrots, cabbage and broccoli, according to the sources.
