Read about this in 'Ethical Consumer' magazine. The idea is that you send them an old pair of jeans (and some money) and they make sandals out of them.
Girls only at the moment but they also have a hemp range, although I didn't get round to looking at those.

Good idea for vegans. The sandals look all right. I don't wear jeans.

Is there anything like that in the US? I have a few pairs of jeans that I can no longer wear due to large holes/tears in the ass. I really hate just throwing them away.

Large holes and tears? They are the height of fashion here. People buy them like that new - for a small fortune.

Yeah, holes and tears in the LEGS. Mine are all in the ass, and I've never seen jeans in the store with pre-made holes designed to expose your butt cheeks....

They could be repaired with colourful vegan patches.

I knew someone who used to wear colorful boxer shorts under her hole-in-the-butt jeans, and let them show through, sort of like a fashion statement.

Sorry if I'm getting off the subject matter here, but do you care less about brand names and fashion status after becoming vegan? I actually find that I do. I used to buy ridiculiously expensive shoes and handbags (always leather of course) and I was very pre-occupied with brands. Today I don't care at all - as long as it looks good on me and flatter my body, I'm happy. Well, except when it comes to jeans: a pair usually cost me between $150 to $ 250. But I only buy one pair every other year or so and use them over and over. It's so difficult to get a OK body in cheap jeans, it really is, unless one is a very fit size 2 person. So it's not the brand, it's all about the right fit.
Other than that, vintage stores, Payless and Forever21, are good enough for me. I wish I could afford to buy more sustainable clothes and that there was a bigger selection out there.
