Wegman's is a large supermarket chain in the US who owns and operates an enormous chicken torture site. I wrote to them complaining about this practice as I used to occasionally shop there. Here is their response:
We received your comments about our egg farm, and it's clear that you feel strongly about this issue.
Our customers and employees know we are always willing to look at doing things better or differently. We are not close-minded and are willing to look at the implications of cage-free production. If there is a significant shift in consumer demand, we'd give serious consideration to some cage-free production, provided it was the right thing for the health of the animals and for the employees at the farm. Our sales of cage-free eggs have risen slightly over the past year, but the volume is still very small.
Your communication specifically mentioned two specialty food stores that have switched to cage-free eggs only. Wegmans is a full-service supermarket, not a specialty food store. Price is important to our customers. They value eggs as an inexpensive source of high quality protein and expect to find them at an affordable price. Some simply can't afford to pay more. We don't believe it's right to force all our customers to pay more than double the price for a dozen eggs just because a few people think we should.
To sum it up: We are proud of our egg farm. The wegmanscruelty film paints a false picture of conditions at our farm. There's no way to prove it, but we believe some of the images did not come from our farm or may have been staged. We do not abuse animals, but rather, we use animals to produce food. And, we offer customers the choice of eggs produced by cage-free hens. If you have not read the complete statement and Q&A on our web site, you may be interested in doing so:

We try to be open-minded; we hope you are, too.
Here's the link to the Wegman's Cruelty film they referred to: http://www.wegmanscruelty.com/
Hmm, I wonder who has more to gain by convincing the public that the graphic videos in the film aren't true..the individuals who made the film on their own time as great risk to themselves legally or Wegman's who is making millions of dollars off the suffering of those poor chickens?
Please sign the petition on the wegman's cruelty link page, Wegmans' email to me claims that they'll change if they see a demand for it.

I signed. Don't know if being an overseas signer will have any influence at all but at least they'll know I'm watching them. There are some distressing photos on that website. :(

Yeah I saw your name Oracl, the petition can't be moving very fast, only 3 or 4 before my attempt.
I don't buy eggs, due to the needless cruelty the hens endure.
Hens suffering is increased because humans want to increase their profits, when will humans learn to extend the arm of respect? My attempt to make a point :shy:(didn't want to sound extremist)

Greetings from UR-VEG at the University of Rochester.
Sometime during the past eight months you signed our
petition asking Danny Wegman to phase out the cruel
"battery" cages used on his 700,000-hen egg farm in
Wolcott, New York.
We'd like to thank you for adding your voice. Over
2,100 other customers have let Wegmans know that
unnecessary animal cruelty is simply unacceptable, and
the number keeps rising.
We're also happy to announce that we recently delivered
the first batch of petitions! Hoping to get Danny's
attention, we printed out your signatures and placed
each one inside a colorful plastic egg. These 2,100
eggs filled over three shopping carts, which we brought
to Wegmans corporate headquarters in Rochester, New York.
As you might imagine, all those eggs made for quite a
sight! The media was there to cover the event, and you
can see excerpts on our website, here:
http://urveg.org/campaigns/wegmans/media/
You may have received Wegmans' email response to the
petition. Instead of following the lead of other grocery
chains that have already phased out battery-cage eggs,
Wegmans continues to make excuses. We think their claims
are misleading at best, or simply false. If you're
interested, we address their excuses here:
http://urveg.org/campaigns/wegmans/responses/
Finally, we encourage you to contact Wegmans directly:
let Danny Wegman know that this issue won't go away
until he cleans up his act! You can send feedback to
the company in a variety of ways:

I made a boo-boo and signed twice. I hope it doesn't spoil things. :shy:

Its one of the most common questions I get asked when omnis are spoiling for a spat, that wouldn't I eat eggs if I could keep them in my own back yard, look after them properly etc. Obviously the answer is no, because I would also have to open a special rest home for the surplus male chickens that would otherwise have to be killed because they don't lay eggs!
There is simply no such thing as a cruelty free egg.

I saw this link on the Vegan Freaks forum. Very graphic but if you're trying to convince someone not to eat eggs, this might do it.

Sad to look at but a very effective way to make someone think twice about eating eggs, I think. :(

I'd have to disagree as, strictly speaking, there is.
I have some rescued hens staying at my place and tried eating some eggs, which tasted vile as I hadn't eaten any in a while. I finished up giving them to the dogs.
I still like to eat baked goods made with eggs and milk products, though, especially when my blood sugar is low and there is nothing else to eat. I can't be bothered to bring along dried fruits or glucose tablets wherever I go, just in case my blood sugar drops.

I guess I just assumed you were, since you seem to like joining vegan forums. Now that I think of it, I don't believe I have ever seen you state plainly "I am vegan" anywhere on the Net. I'm not going to make a big deal out of this, but it would be nice if you had been honest. It may just be a case of omission, but its still very deceptive.

Ah, well the flaw in the plan Mr C is that hens have got to be there to be rescued you see. Thats where the cruelty comes in including the stage where the male chicks are slaughtered. You then rescued them from a cruel environment.
Def cruelty free once you got hold of them but in order to reproduce the situation you'd have to start by hens being in the cruel environment to be rescued from.

Yes, I saw that over there too, and I thought if I had just been veggie and needed convincing then that would have given me the push to be vegan, so is definitely one to send to omnis and veggies.

WARNING, DON'T READ THIS POST IF YOU ARE EATING
When I was vegetarian I ate eggs. I think just like people that eat meat should see it being slaughtered and see how it is in reality, people should see what I saw in an egg. It would hopefully gross them out. I don't see how it could not.
I had a good date for the eggs, but when I went to seperate them, (I never liked the white part anyhow), they had already started forming. OMG, it was so gross. The white part had attached and I could see what looked like an embreo. I mean, with an egg, it's always right there, hello, that is what it IS. It's always gross in that knowing, but to see it get beyond that in appearance to what it really IS in looks also, OMG. I can't say anymore.
I am cured of eggs forever. And I am SOOOO upset that those wonderful little LOMA LINDA canned 'steaks' have egg white. Damn, that ruins them. They don't taste good even in my head anymore.
